UPDATE 8/4/2021: Upgraded AMD 3600 to AMD 5900x.
THE BUILD
This is my second PC build to date. I do photography (as you might tell) and a bit of gaming when I can. I wanted this to look good while being a workhorse. There's a few upgrades to make further but here it is...
CASE
Had to go with the Lian Li option of course for the aesthetics. Went with the Razer edition as it was the one available at the time during the holidays. Had to delay the build because the first shipment came with a broken footing. Took a few weeks to get the replacement. Once everything was put together I added the NEON strip lighting to add more RGB in the areas I thought looked like something was missing and finish off the boxed lighting.
CPU
Story of our lives with the shortages... I'm still waiting for a 5900x to replace the 3600 placeholder I got. 3600 was on sale for $150 so I just went with that to hold me over for a little while. Does well but does get pushed during exporting.
GPU
I was able to upgrade from the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW to a MSI 3080 Ti Suprime X on a lucky find. Still paid a hefty amount to get it. But definitely a beast card! I had some trouble swapping it over since I had the 1080 vertically mounted. Immediately just had a blank black screen when I put the 3080 Ti in the vertical mount. So I put it in horizontally without issues and ran it like that for a few days. After some research and wanting to try putting it vertically for aesthetics like the 1080 I did so by switching the PCIe 4.0 to 3.0 as there are issues with the riser cables being rated for PCIe 3.0 which is why I was getting a blank screen. Once I had it in the vertical position everything wasn't as good like it was horizontally or even when the 1080 was mounted vertical. Temperatures were way much higher and you could hear the turbulence in the case since 3080 gpu was much closer to the glass and covered more fan areas. So, back to mounting it horizontally. It still looks good that way and everything is much more stable.
COOLING/FANS
Ok ok, I confess that I originally went full Corsair fanboy on this build. Ordered it all and looked more into the Lian Li SL120's once I started looking into how to layout a bajillion fans (this is my second build ever). I really wanted these fans for the look of the RGB and easier wiring over the Corsair. Prices and availability was horrible but I searched everywhere. Luckily someone local had 8 of them for sale on OfferUp for $220 total. I grabbed them as fast as I could and returned the QL120s. I would have preferred the black set over the white but there's not a ton of pick and choosing this year.
NZXT Z73 of course in a push/pull config. It's big, it's badass and has that cool display. I added a version of my logo to it which does a spinning effect to mimic a camera shutter.
Fan Layout
-
Top: (INTAKE) AIO Push/Pull (3x) NZXT and (3x) SL120 Fans
-
Side: (EXHAUST) 3x SL120 Fans
-
Bottom: (INTAKE) 3X SL120 Fans
Photography Tid-Bits This is for you photo nerds... here's my setup for the shots of the PC. I photograph weddings and other lifestyle events. Product photography isn't my jam but I gave it a try here.
-
The setup for this was one main light ~20 degress in front of the PC to give it some fill light. I moved it around as necessary to get different details. This was a 38" gridded deep parabolic softbox power by a Godox AD200.
-
The colored lighting behind the PC was used with two Godox V860ii. I played with couple different gel colors. Red, Blue and a 3 stack of full CTO for most of the shots.
-
The background is a bone color seamless paper roll from Savage.
-
One tip I learned quick was to have the power cord from the PC elevated off the floor during the shots. This helped with removing it in post production than if it were closer to the floor. Less clean up that way.
-
Camera: Canon R6 with 24, 35, 50, 85 and 135mm lenses.
The End
Thanks for reading through the build. It was lots of fun to build and photograph. I'm not the most knowledgeable builder so let me know if I've missed a huge detail. So far it hasn't exploded so I think all is good. Thank you to every who inspired me to build this and provided great information put this machine together.
Cheers!
Part Reviews
CPU Cooler
It's a beast! Works well and looks good with the display. I heard some bad reviews on the display but mine is vibrant and bright. I just can't get orange colors to show very well.
Motherboard
No hickups so far. Only bummer part is that I wish it had one more USB port to manage all the fans, AIO and front ports. I had to get an internal hub to make-do.
Storage
Got this on sale. Wish I got two!
Case
The cat's meow! Absolutely perfect case for building in. Looks good and manages all the components well. Perfect "on the desk" size which also pushed me to get my old clunker off the ground.
Power Supply
Plenty of power and supplied cables.
Case Fan
Genius design and RGB! Knocking a point for quality as I had issues with one of the hubs breaking. The connection points on the board are very weak. Luckily I had an extra.
