Cheap and silent mass storage. I use it for all my pictures, videos, etc. as well as storing any games I'm not currently playing. Fantastic in tandem with my ssd to get the best of both worlds.
Using them at home for the server's hot-swap backup and thought I should use one in my main machine as well.
Already had the 5 x 1TB WD Green from my Old Box. So dropping them into this Box for ZoL (ZFS on Linux) in a raidz configuration was a given. Did have to set a variable in /etc/modprobe.d/zfs.conf to limit ZFS to only use a Max of 4G of ram so it didn't try to use 12G. YES, honestly ZFS defaults to trying to utilize 75 percent of the over all System Memory. I LOVE me some ZFS, but even true Love has LIMITS !! These 5 drives have all been running 24x7 since FEB of 2009 !!
Reusing from old build
Starting to show it's age after almost 8 years of usage. Gonna need to replace soon. Quiet drive and plenty of storage, but it's time for a replacement.
The WD Green drives generally run cooler, quieter and more power efficient than most HDDs, which for some implies lowered performance. While that's probably true compared to a Black or Red WD drive, I haven't really noticed that much lowered performance in terms of everyday use. Go Green!
Started its life recording from a CCTV camera, now I'm viewing and hacking CCTV images in Watch Dogs. Meta enough?
Does what I need it to do, which is hold my dank memes and games that I don't want to take up space on my SSD.
I actually pillaged this from my old computer; it was my main storage drive there but plenty o backup space. Saved what I wanted (documents, pictures) to a thumb drive and wiped the whole thing clean.
Solid hard drive I included as a storage device for all the photo's and video's my wife has. Plus it doubles as a system backup.
Eco friendly, a little slow, but RAID0 makes it fast enough.
