I'm building a new PC backwards. How so you ask ? Well....I've used Shuttle builds since the SN41G and now I'm cannibalising a 6 year old S38 pro Shuttle with E8400 and 8Gb RAM. I will cannibalise & reuse Samsung SSD 840 500Gb (OS & Apps), Intel SSD 60Gb (photoshop previews & scratchdisk), and internal WD 3Tb and Seagate 2Tb storage drives. I have W7 64x. I can recycle the Radeon 6670 if need be.
So, these are my objectives -
- Mostly web, email, vlc, Plex media server with Lightroom & Photoshop (moderate use) and Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Fireworks (light use). I've started to do a little video editing.
- I like quiet...fans..psu...
- I like reliable
- No games
- No overclocking
- Understated appearance is good
- Smaller is better
- I am value conscious.
So here are my thoughts, please disagree
A. I am attracted to the underdog AMD, I like FX, it seems a blind alley. The sweetspot seems to be around Intel i5 4690 today. B. Chipset LGA 1150. But which variant ? I don't overclock; does that mean H97 ? And H97 looks identical to H87. Confusing. C. I'm going to go with onboard graphics and if it chugs I'll recycle the Radeon 6670. D. Form Factor. microATX or mini itx. I like small, but I also like some future proofing. I'm never going to exceed 2 x 8Gb Ram. Dual ethernet...WiFi are these available on micro or min atx boards. E. Choice of PSU and case fans installed/based on low noise. F. Choice of case. Now I know I'm never going to find a case as small as the Shuttle's SX38 (335Dx220Lx210H)...but there must be a happy compromise. There must be a smaller silent case than the Fractal Design R4 (please). Fractal Design Mini ?
This is it.
Comments please or should I go back and start with itx ?
