MSI Build Your Dream PC Guide Contest

philip

Feb. 1, 2016

PLEASE NOTE: The contest has officially ended. Huge thanks to MSI, and to everyone who entered. No further entries will be accepted at this time. Any further voting will not be counted.

Random Selection Winner:

Wheezy2Ez - The 4K Dream

Top Voted Winner:

Jipster69 - Jipster Edition =P Mini ITX! ~ GTX980 Ti! ~ i7-6700K!

We've teamed up with MSI for a build contest! Pick your parts, explain why they're the best, and possibly win your part list up to $2,000!

First off, a huge thanks to MSI for sponsoring this contest!

Here's how it works - create a build guide with the following criteria:

  • The title of the build guide must start with "MSI Build Your Dream PC Guide"
  • You must choose any MSI Z170A GAMING or MSI X99A GAMING motherboard.
  • You must choose any MSI NVIDIA 9XX series or MSI AMD 3XX series video card.
  • You must not exceed $2,000 USD for the total cost. Prices are subject to change every day, so make sure the total build price is under $2,000 at the end of the contest.
  • The build guide must have the following components: CPU, CPU Cooler, Motherboard, Memory, Storage, Video Card (can have SLI or Crossfire), Case, and Power Supply.

Two winners will be chosen:

  • One winner will be chosen by random
  • One winner will be chosen by the most upvotes (with a tie given to the guide with the most comments)

Click here for the full official rules.

Again, a huge thanks goes out to MSI for sponsoring this contest. Give them a follow and a shout on Twitter @msiUSA, and give their Facebook page a like too!

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Attempts to manipulate voting by entering multiple times, voting with duplicate/fake/sock accounts will be grounds for an account ban and disqualification.
  • Linking your guide link in multiple guides, forum topics, etc. will be treated as spam and will be deleted. Excessively spamming guide links will result in an account ban and disqualification.

Just posted my build guide. The Shadow.

Even if it doesn't win, I'm interested in having feedback on it simply as a build.

Good luck to everyone!

Apparently I may have an incompatible motherboard ....

@Philip Do you think next time could we have a list of compatible parts? That would help with a lot of confusion ....

at the top it shows when a part is not compatible :) useful for when building a pc.

Say you're not 18 or older (I'm 16) could my parents claim the build if I win?

  • 6 points

Yes, as long as you have your parent consent.

Thank you.

That's changes SOOO much

Are you eligible to win of you live in Canada? Is the 2000$ limit in USD?

  • 1 point

Yes. MSI said on their Facebook post that all regions are eligible to enter. https://www.facebook.com/172177528083/app/228910107186452

MSI Marketing Rep -

Hi All,

I would like to say Thank You for participating and Thank to PCPartPicker (Staff). I know there are couple of flaws but this is our first time doing a contest which we thought would be fun and free. I definitely have taken all the feedback from alot of people and will make the next contest better. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I will try my best to answer them.

Thank you.

I really want to clear this up by getting a response from somone at MSi because I have found nothing conlcusive on the matter except for specualtion from other contest members. So, MSI representatives, do the MSI Z170A Krait Gaming Motherboards count. Please clarify as this could disqualify many of the builds out there and I know that I myself and many others have been trying to figure this out. Please answer this as soon as you can or maybe post an update about it in the contest rules.

Thanks

  • 3 points

Philip you shouldn't host contests that have a "most upvotes" winner, because you are basically giving a free computer to jipster...

[comment deleted by staff]
  • 2 points

It's going downhill.

  • 5 points

We're aware of the vote manipulation and those entries will be disqualified. No need to fret just yet.

  • 5 points

I think it would be more fair if you got all the PCPP and MSI staff to have a vote on their favourite build, then choose that, rather than let upvotes decide, since some people are manipulating votes so badly.

  • 4 points

Entries that violate the contest rules will be disqualified. Also, there will be a random winner that is independent of how many votes received. We'll also be applying lessons learned from this to future contests.

  • 1 point

Is sharing a link to your contest build on here allowed?

  • 1 point

Yes.

  • 1 point

Gotta love politics. Surly, the leaders shouldn’t de disqualified, however I find it funny how many times they have sent/commented their build link to the public/individuals across the internet.

I suppose it does count as hard work, but nonetheless, I think it is hilarious how politically enmeshed any medium of voting becomes.

this maybe obvious but i still gotta ask, can we submit two entries?

no

[comment deleted]
  • 1 point

Only problem with that is that the contest clearly stated to share your link with friends, family, etc. so how would somebody receive their votes if new accounts can't vote?

[comment deleted]
[comment deleted]
[comment deleted by staff]
  • 2 points

That's correct. Only one build will count toward the contest. Though all three you mentioned in that case wouldn't qualify as the title is not correct. (One case where it doesn't pay to try and use fancy unicode letters...)

  • 1 point

Hi, I would also like to ask you something. If we say..chose to delete a build we previously entered and submitted a new one. Would the new build count?

[comment deleted by staff]
[comment deleted by staff]
  • 1 point

Those with 3 builds will not be counted. Only 1 Philip is correct as all the fancy letter wouldn't qualify him anyway.

Thank you.

Thanks for making it fair! Also, that's an awesome MSI badge next to your username :)

  • 1 point

If I could make a suggestion? I think the builds would get much more creative if builders weren't locked to ATX boards... I actually had a whole build based on the Z170I AC ITX motherboard, but now I've got to tear that down and turn it into something more conventional...

[comment deleted]
  • 3 points

We did do 1 RANDOM but yeah we should eliminate the voting next time and choose by who we think has the best guide and most helpful.

Thank you for the feedback.

  • 2 points

Next time ? You guys at MSI are awesome haha. Thanks a ton for the opportunity.

  • 4 points

Yes we plan to do this again but definitely better!

This is just a test run to get the PROS and CONS and to get feedback so we can improve.

Thank you.

  • 2 points

No problem at all, but could the winner of this one not be able to win the next ? As, some people here have a huge following. (I'm looking at you jipster.) I don't know how much you all lurk here, I could be talking to the wind but, that would be something that would help the other builders out. I have no issue with jipster winning, he is an awesome guy, but 2 times in a row that would kind of get to the unfair part.

  • 1 point

If the other rules remain the same, the "best and most helpful guide" really isn't the best criteria.

In this sort of contest, the goal is essentially to spend as much of the $2000 as possible-regardless of whether doing so would actually make sense. You don't get to keep the extra after all. I certainly wouldn't buy the components in my submission, but then the ones I would buy come out to a measly $1100. And all told, I'd much rather have $2000 of free stuff than $1100.

Just my 2 cents.

  • 1 point

This is just a test run to see the PROS and CONS. We definitely appreciate your feedback and will make the next contest fair while fun for all.

Motherboard selection is still a little confusing. First guideline states that it has to either be Z170A GAMING or X99A GAMING. My one question with this is, does the GAMING have to come first in the name in order for the motherboard to qualify? Ex. X99A GODLIKE GAMING CARBON VS. X99A GAMING 9 ACK. Does it strictly have to fall in the order of Z170A GAMING/X99A Gaming or is it acceptable to use something that still contains those words but not in the exact order as in the case of the X99A GODLIKE GAMING CARBON?

Also maybe we should compile a list of qualifying motherboards as this seems to be confusing everyone. MSI can you help with that??

Thanks!!

  • 1 point

Its need to be X99 or Z170 chipset, in the name, there must be the chipset followed by A, and then anything after that as long as it has gaming in it

Like, I don't mean to be rude, but WTF why did this person win (the random winner) ? He just joined PCPP Feb. 4th. This isn't fair to members, like me, who have been with PCPP since November of 2014. I mean congratulations to him but I don't believe his part selection is that great. I mean really? The source 210 with 2 980Ti's?

Anyways, fun time with the contest, hope there's another one soon...

  • 1 point

So what if they just joined? What makes them less deserving?

  • 1 point

IMO it's just not fair. If you join the last day of the contest because your friend's friend friend told you about this awesome website and you could win a $2k PC and you do. That's just not fair to people that have been with this site for a long time and, I'm active in the PCPP community. Yes, it's a contest but they haven't really "contributed" anything great to the PCPP community.

I'm not whining because I didn't win, I mean congrats to the guy who won, I just think it's unfair in several different ways.

  • 2 points

If you mean unfair as in the rules were not as you would have designed, then ok. But it was fair. It was a random selection, giving everyone an equal opportunity regardless of when they registered. Seniority in registration date does not mean you've earned extra contest credits. There are users who registered here in 2010, but they had the same opportunity as you.

  • 1 point

Ha, I understand seniority in registration date doesn't mean I earned any extra "contest credits." Yeah, the rules were fair. Yes, a random selection, and yes, equal opportunity to everyone. I guess what I'm saying is that there could have been different rules.

  • 0 points

The rules were posted before the contest began. I understand you don't like them, but you still entered.

  • 1 point

Make up your mind. At one point you complain that jipster won because he's an established member now you're complaining that the other guy who won is not an established member. That being said the contest could have been run better and they are aware of that, it was a first try and they're learning. The draw winners build is dubious at best. Ranging from the solo 120GB SSD to the i5 w/ a 212 evo paired with SLI 980 TI's. I would have liked them to have people put a bit more effort/research in their explanation/build or skip them altogether.

  • 1 point

My mind is maid up. I'm not complaining because I didn't win. I'm only "complaining" because the rules were twisted in several ways, and yes, I agree that people should have put more effort into their explanation and build.

note: I'm from Quebec so even if I had known about the contest I cannot win. I can participate but I can't be the winner, my entry will be voided.

Yeah but Quebec is special. The State owns all the rights for anything vaguely related to "contest" where there is a prize to win. Even inside Canada most of the time we see "open to all Canadian residents except Quebec". I't so pathetic that all there is to do is laugh!

You just have to fulfill the part requirements listed in the description. Anything else you want to include in the build is up to you.

ok the X99 series have very few models of Gaming series

are we only limited to Gaming series or can we use the MPower mobo or they are not counted?

Doesn't this limit everyone to ATX or EATX form factor? That seems counter-productive.

  • 4 points

You're being offered potentially $2,000 worth of free parts and are complaining about form factor?

I'm not complaining. I'm curious about a limitation that disqualifies different form factors. Seems like a lot of these builds are the same.

I don't know were to submit my build but I hope its here! My build was planned for my needs of playing and recording high fps games and editing sound and video. I love my Msi laptop but If I win this contest this will be my first desktop since my parents wont buy a computer that can only be at either of their houses. I don't know if the contest includes Screens, software and headphones but I included those in my build so please let me know if that will disqualify me. My build total is $1782.12 USD $2243.64 CAD This is my build name I hope this is how I enter it >https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Jujub555/saved/#view=6TzQzy <

Thank you so much for this opportunity MSI, (and for my soon to be new PC >:) ) Its great to look at other people's builds who have more experience then me to see what they do differently. Best luck to everyone and may the best build win (aka not mine ? :/)!

You must choose any MSI Z170A GAMING or MSI X99A GAMING motherboard.

This seems moderately Intel-biased.

Can you guys clarify a few things:

  1. You say the parts list has to be under $2000 at the END of the contest? If we end up losing a critical rebate or a component jumps in price are we allowed to make changes to our builds to put us back under the limit? Do we have to make a new submission or are we just allowed to edit the old one?

  2. Are MIRs and combo discounts included? What about places that would normally charge tax and shipping?

  • 1 point

I made my limit the 2000 subtotal, I wouldn't think mail in rebates or shipping would count (as this contest is international), I could be wrong though.

  • 1 point

Their picture for not exceeding $2000 (step 8) specifically highlights the price after a MIR. Nothing else says one way or the other though.

Type Item Price

A damn solid cooler.
Motherboard MSI Z170A GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $162.98 @ Newegg

Case NZXT S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case $64.99 @ Micro Center
A case. A nice one but still a glorified box to put stuff in.
Power Supply SeaSonic Platinum 860W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply $129.99 @ Newegg

  • 1 point

https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/RtkcCJ/edit/#view=GcgG3C I had to resubmit this because I tagged it improperly.

This build was designed for maximum cost efficiency alongside an easy upgrade path, with a bit of color coordination. I chose storage, RAM, and PSU solutions based on an easy upgrade path.

With a 1TB SSD and a 2TB HDD, the user won't need to be upgrading their internal storage anytime soon (I prefer NAS anyway). The SSD also matches the color scheme. The SSD isn't the greatest, but it is certainly better than any HDD and for most people, the difference between this and something very high end like a 750 series SSD would not be noticeable.

32GB of RAM is a bit excessive, but it should last the user for a very long time, and hopefully won't be a bottleneck when considering future upgrades. It matches the color scheme nicely with a hint of red.

An 860W Platinum certified PSU is more than enough to handle a second 980 Ti in the future, and as components become more power efficient it should continue to last just fine. It also matched the color scheme.

The processor was chosen based on cost effectiveness. An i7-6700k is great, but it's more than $150 more than the i5-6600k. It was an easy choice to save money without losing much performance.

A 980 Ti was a no brainer for a $2000 pricepoint. I was considering SLI, but that would take up 70% of the budget, leaving only $600 for all other components. That's not quite enough.

The motherboard was also a no brainer. To qualify for the giveaway, I needed the best MSI Z170 Gaming board I can fit in. MSI's red/black color scheme is easy to follow with other components.

The case was chosen because it's my personal favorite. There's lots of room for cable management, more/better watercooling, and it is the red & black one, matching the color scheme.

Lastly, I chose the cooler because it's from a reputable brand, mostly matches the color scheme, and is overall a good AIO unit.

See the Cold Heated Dragon. This guide is a different spin on the conventional MSI gaming scheme. The symbolic GAMING colors on the outside and the ice cold heart of a GAMER on the inside.

I mean you can't have hard feelings when you are creating "MAD BROS" with inferior pcs trying to compete with the quality parts in the Cold Heated Dragon.

I don't understand this so am I supposed to post my guide here for votes or is that a DQ? I entered through the website but how would that work if votes on the guide is also a factor, I've made a guide and it took really long and it's quite informative. But i really hope you guys have a way to counter these people who vote using fake accounts, use VPNs and proxy and chaning ip, these can all be a problem :(

Thanks

Just finished my build. No chance of winning by votes so fingers crossed on the other option.

I wish I knew about this sooner! Since I'm new to PCPP, I'm going to post my link since I don't know anyone on here, and I want to be able to share my build with those who see this post.
