Updated September Build Guides

manirelli

Sept. 25, 2014

We have updated two of our September build guides to take advantage of the newly released GTX 970 and GTX 980 video cards. Take a look and let us know what you think!

Very nice! Thank you.

I think a lot of people would appreciate it if a guide like this was made for the UK, a lot of people using this site don't have access to american shops where the hardware is considerably cheaper with the current exchange rate.

We are planning to open the guide section up to users in the future but it still requires some tweaks before that is ready.

If it's bad for UK people, imagine for the people in Brazil, with our crazy tax politics :'(

Even worse in New Zealand... $2,200 NZD build here is worth about $1300 USD

Hey Manirelli! Want to add something like I am building for a friend to your list, has all the new things. Mind double checking the amps for the 980gtx to make sure it is running just right (~24amps per 6 pin suggested) Just wanted to add a DDR4 build for future proofing. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/i8wd40b4u/saved/bW7scf

You shouldn't have any power issues with that build. Good luck!

Hi Guys!

These listings are suprisingly great. There's little room for price optimizing. One great thing to note about the listing, a person can easily change the $650 budget to $450 by changing the video card to a medium-high range GTX 750 Ti.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/sp2vsY

I also changed the case because based on the description, the NZXT only comes with one fan. The Galaxy-01 includes 3 fans pre-installed, which in my opinion makes the Galaxy-01 a much better case overall. Extra fans should reduce thermal temperatures on all the components, which decreases the amount of electromigration.

Edit: Also lowering the CPU to an overclockable Pentium chip, and getting a cheaper hard drive nearly brings the price down to $350. Which is absurdly cheap for a medium range gaming PC.

How about some price point builds for Canadian Dollar or other currencies?

Can you do a 2-2.5k build? Thanks!

  • 3 points

Honestly, that is pretty unlikely. At that budget there are so many different variables to consider and much of it becomes personal preference that it wouldn't be all that useful in my opinion.

Any plans for a $1500?

  • 2 points

Probably not. At that price point many things become more about personal opinion and aesthetics than performance per dollar.

Thank you for the response.

Thank you very much for this effort, manirelli. The reasons behind the choices and later discussion with the users are very enlightning. I hope you continue to maintain builds at those price ranges for the months to come, perhaps in a dedicated section of the blog.

Thanks for the feedback! We've got some really cool things planned for build guides to make sure they are even more up to date that I am really excited about. Keep an eye out!

Can you please factor in the cost of an OS to these builds? They are a little misleading.

the ram that is stated in the 1200 and 1000 dollar build. is it better to go with g skill ripjaw or sniper series 2x4 gb? or go with 1x8? I hear the dual channel is faster?

I find your guides very useful. thank you. Even better if UK prices\suppliers included. But I've never played a game in my life.

I'm a photoshop person...with a little video editing

From 2008...I'm still running Intel E8450 3Mhz dual core with 8Gb ram. W7 64X. 2 x SSD, 1 x 4tb drive and (hangs head in shame) Radeon 6450 in a Shuttle case. Yes, I do not like fan noise.

With Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 5 and 45000 photos it creaks a little these days - where do us non gamers go for advice on where to get the best return on our money ?

Your best bet is the create a part list for me subforum. Also, if you haven't already, make sure you change the dropdown to UK in the top right corner of the site to see prices and retailers more applicable to you.

Thanks. These things always take an age when they are hobby rather than necessity.

How about a ~3000+ USD Gaming Build?

  • 1 point

No chance. At that budget it is more of a passion project and individuals will spend more for aesthetics or a specific usage.
