Description

Back in March, I built my new Skylake build. The build went great and i even made a post here. But at the time there were a few things bothering me.

First, I'd bought the GPU over a year ago and it didn't seem to the system justice. And i wanted to beyond 1080p gaming and that card wasn't gonna cut it with the monitor I had my eye on.

Second, while almost everything looked great, the massive heatsink of the CPU cooler was a bit of an eyesore. And the stock cables from the PSU didn't help too.

Next, I had gotten a fan controller from Silverstone, but all my fans were 3 pin fans and therefore ran at a 100% all the time :/

So now that I've finally started working full-time and have some cash to splurge, I decided to take my system from a mid-tier one to a true beast of a system. Here are all the upgrades I made:

Got the Acer Predator X34. This monitor is literally (totally subjective opinion) the best monitor for gaming. The only thing someone might say is that it isn't 144hz. Though I'd pick the 21:9 aspect ratio over 144hz anyday.

Got 2 MSI GTX 1080's. I thought 2 might be overkill, but games like Witcher 3 can dip below 60 on a single card.

Got the 950 PRO. Now I can instalock Hanzo in every match in overwatch :D (jk, please don't pick Hanzo)

Got all new PWM fans for the fan controller. Now it is absolutely silent on idle and pretty quiet even on full load.

Got the Corsair H60. Yes, I know it's not a whole lot better than the Hyper 212 Evo I had. But this was more about aesthetics than anything else. And I've got my CPU at GHz now. That's plenty.

Got sleeved extensions and cablecombs from Phanteks. They look great. All I was looking for.

Got a bunch of peripherals to go with the setup.

As always, Yes, I know this is very long post :P But if you're reading all the way till here, thank you! Have a nice day Sir/Madam :D

Amazing build! You did a great job building this.... May it last for eternity! But... I would love to see some benchmarks of some games, if that is possible.

Bought them on the cheap when I was a student. Always use headphones, so I haven't really felt the need to upgrade :/

Are those cherry mx reds on that keyboard? If they are im sorry you have to deal with those horrible switches.

Nah he's got MX Browns.

Nope, browns. Need that tactile feedback! :D

what's wrong with reds?

  • 2 points

They just have no tactility and in game just resting your fingers on the keys triggers them. (I have heavy hands) Im not fat im 6'5 so I think youll understand.

I'm 6'3" I currently use browns. But I tried out a logitech board with reds at microcenter once and I actually really liked the feel.

Yea once I got in game they were just awful for me i kept triggering movements just by resting my hands on the keys and I just got really annoyed.

I wouldn't have gone with a v300 ssd because of theyre quality and speed issues. Other than that, It's pretty great :)

Yeah, I didn't buy them, I just had them laying around so I just threw it in. My boot drive + the games I'm currently playing are on the 950 PRO.

Is that mount the Freedom Arm? How do you like it?

You might need help setting it up, especially with such a big monitor. But it works great! The default stand on the predator takes up half a desk and is difficult to move :/

Thanks for the feedback, I just got mine setup last night. The space it opens up is fantastic!

Nice build! But If you don't mind can you tell why you use i5 6600k instead of i7 6700k or x99 series cpu? Is i5 6600k engoht for gaming ?

  • 2 points

That depends on the definition of enough. You could show an example of a game which is cpu bound like city skylines and claim that you need a 6700k. But for 99% of the games you'll see almost no performance gain from an i7. However, if you plan to do video editing, then yes the 6700k makes sense. But not for pure gaming.
