Upgrade in the works! Hint: more CPUs
Complete! Adding pictures eventually. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
We had a spare i7 975 and motherboard lying around, as well as GPU and CPU cooler, so this happened. Before, we rented an ARK: Survival Evolved server, and I figured I could make a dedicated server for it. $173 for a fully functioning server isn't too bad. (It beats monthly payments :P) We originally bought 3x4gb of Avixir core series ram, but the motherboard refused to boot with it, despite having the same timings, voltage, and frequency as the RAM in the original system this was in. It does, however, boot with 8gb per RAM slot, despite supporting only 4. Go figure.
Case built! I'll paint it one day...
While the I7 975 is definitely an older CPU, not only was it free, it still rocks ARK and TF2 server duties. Can't complain there. This computer currently runs an ARK dedicated server, and a TF2 dedicated pub server. Latency is around 0-6, which is crazy for me, going from latency of 60+. As far as temps go, I haven't seen it exceed 40c while under load. For the ARK server, this tool was incredibly useful: https://steamcommunity.com/app/346110/discussions/0/615086038678228443/
P.S. sorry for the foot :P the foot is gone. RIP
I got this from someone for free who upgraded to a new i7. Considering how old this processor is, it's pretty dang good. It's basically the equivalent of a modern i5 processor, although with a considerably lower single-thread rating. I use it to host servers, and combined with 16 gigs of ram, can run 2 ark servers and a TF2 pub at the same time, while at roughly 40% CPU usage. Pretty great! Its major downsides are the lower single-thread rating, and a higher power draw because it's 9 years old. Overclocking helps boost performance, but increases voltage even higher.
Cools an overclocked I7 975. Hasn't overheated, and is pretty quiet, so it's OK in my book.
It was free. Lots of PCI slots, and good for overclocking. However, only 2 RAM slots work. Does work with certain 8gb modules, though.
It's 1tb, and holds data. 10/10
Had it lying around. Can't play games, but handy for when your I7 975 doesn't have an iGPU.
It can power an I7 975 @ 4.0 GHz. It's good enough for me.
