Description

Yep that's dual Xeon e5's in there.

New server built for hosting Virtual Machines. New domain controller will be the first VM to call this home. There is plenty of room for more machines in the very new future.

Mobo: Asus server board with room for 512gb of memory, unllike other dual cpu boards.

CPUx2: Xeon e5 2650, i was looking for a good balance of cores/threads per dollar and with 32 available these will do the job just fine.

Heatsinks: Decided to be different and go with something else. They work fine and take up less space than other coolers. I did have to change the direction though once i put the hard drive cage in because of a cabling issue though.

Ram: crucial, 32 gb to start plenty of room for more if needed.

PSU: plenty of juice for the job, Chosen for the modular cables, and the dual cpu pin support.

Case: nice generic server case. No room to gro however unless i use the optical bays

Pike card: Raid card from Asus with LSI

well i think that about covers it.

Nice to see a server on here :)

polarbehr submitter 4 Builds 5 points 49 months ago

thanks

boss would rather build than buy, lucky me :)

plgdg 1 Build 1 point 49 months ago

Same. I just built a new dual Xeon server for us here, too. (64GB of memory... because boss likes overkill lol.)

polarbehr submitter 4 Builds 2 points 49 months ago

its not overkill if you plan on using it for VMs

plgdg 1 Build 1 point 49 months ago

That's actually the plan :) We're going to run Server 2012 as a VM under Server 2012 R2.

ANONYMOU53 1 point 13 months ago

get an XP VM and see how long you can go without getting a virus

Retroman 1 point 49 months ago

I agree, nice to see something different :) +1

Awesome build and super powerful. :) BTW, to all those who keep trying to name their machine 'Beast', this is what a REAL one looks like.

polarbehr submitter 4 Builds 3 points 49 months ago

if only it were going home with me

cooperred 2 Builds 2 points 49 months ago

I think this is the first dual CPU build on here.... props to you

polarbehr submitter 4 Builds 3 points 49 months ago

I just wish there was more dual CPU support on here

ReDnAx1991 7 Builds 2 points 49 months ago

Really, really nice premium build. Never seen a dual processor build on here. +1 for the build, +1 for the parts and a +1 for high quality pictures. Hope your boss and company enjoyes the shear power of this thing.

If I were to say one thing about the build is that the left CPU cooler is blowing directly in the PSU, maybe you should configure the cooler to blow to the back of the case. My 2 cents.

Other than that +3 !!

Does this support 128GB Ram? Probably a stupid question but whatever...

polarbehr submitter 4 Builds 1 point 49 months ago

the board supports up to 512gb, perfect for a VM host

8BitPhoenix 4 Builds 1 point 49 months ago

OMG....

Pencil465b 1 point 49 months ago

is 512gb of ram enough for minecraft??? ;)

polarbehr submitter 4 Builds 8 points 49 months ago

Barley enough for minesweeper

core_dump 1 point 49 months ago

Nice, what kind of cool stuff do you do with this?

polarbehr submitter 4 Builds 1 point 49 months ago

Nothing yet, I will move a few test VMs over to it tomorrow. Once everything checks out, next week it goes into service. First thing will be a new domain controller.

Vainslay 1 Build 1 point 49 months ago

I personally, am especially fond of the last picture. This is pretty cool. +1

chinesecartoons 1 point 49 months ago

Should have gotten a case where there is top vents, and the psu on the bottom so hot air doesn't get inside. That is just a preference, not sure if it would really make a real difference in temperature.

polarbehr submitter 4 Builds 1 point 49 months ago

It's going in a room that never gets above 70 degrees, top vents aren't really needed as the PSU pulls hot air from the inside, the way computers have been doing since forever.

Brandino312 2 Builds 1 point 45 months ago

How many frames on minecraft does it get? Just kidding

Nsp341 1 point 19 months ago
