Description

Edited: As of January 14 2015 This PC is for both gaming and video editing. I like the case a lot. It has a lot of room but not quite enough for proper cable management. 6 fans can be put in here and it is overall pretty quiet. Gaming at 1080p is very doable. Rendering is a lot faster than my old oem pc from 10 yrs ago that's for sure. Glad I built it and saved a bunch of money buying used. Nothing wrong with that. Windows 8 was not pirated FYI, I get a free copy as an engineering student.

CPU: Bought on ebay from a seller who couldn't get it working with his motherboard so he listed it really cheap so he could get a new cpu quickly. Luckily I was looking at that point. I got it overclocked to 4.3 very easily with no voltage bump. I'm looking for more but it's fine for now. I heard that bulldozer is bad but it can't be worse than using an athlon x2 3800+... Big improvement.

CPU Cooler: Switched out the hyper 212 cooler for a thermaltake nic c5. It runs cooler but it is very loud, even with headphones. If i turn down the fans the noise is bearable and still with decent temps.

Case: Bought on Newegg also for 34.99 with a 10$ MIR. It was worth every penny. Decent airflow with included fans and space for long gpus. I don't know if I could fit an AIO liquid cooler in here in the future but I could try.

Motherboard: Switched out the ga-78lmt-usb3 for a GA 970a- UD3 I can overclock much more on here and it is full atx so i get some more pci slots back. Also sata 3 instead of 2 for faster drive speeds Ram: Jumped from 8gb all the way to 16gb ddr3 1600 and I love having more ram. Nuff said.

GPU: Changed out the gtx 550ti for a radeon 7950/R9 280. I can play any game at 1080p and that is what I was aiming for. OCed it to 1150mhz core and 1250mhz on the memory.

Storage: 120gb hdd came with old pc so free...? 500gb hdd was bought a couple years ago from blinq through ebay. I got it on sale new for 28$. Such a great deal even today IMO. Added a 1tb WD Blue and a 120gb 840 evo. Booting is lightning fast as well as general tasks.

PSU: Was bought a couple months after hdd. It is fairly quiet and supplies enough power. 80+ bronze from Antec. It's gucci.

OS: Being an engineering student, I am allowed at most one copy of almost any windows OS so yeah. Free 99

Monitor: 22" LG IPS panel (Matte) Great colors and 5ms response time. Video here:

There weren't many pictures during building but I did make a video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YIX0zzv9Cw&list=UUslThwjWeZoi448DUub_kmw

The pricing for the ram, motherboard, cpu cooler, and graphics card are all estimates. This is because I got a great deal on ebay for all of that at 145$. Clearly it is all worth more than that so that's what I believe the breakdown to be.

All of this for around 500 and I'm glad I didn't have to buy a console. No offense.

Overall this pc can be upgraded piece by piece and I'm fine with that. Cheap gaming and editing here I come.

For the price I'm gonna have to give it a +1.

Also, depending on how long ago you purchased the motherboard, I may have sold it to you. I sold a GA-78LMT-USB3 a couple of months ago on eBay for about that price. That'd be funny if it actually was me.

can i ask how the mobo performs as i just got one and haven't really had the courage to o'c or go too harsh on it

No idea, never overclocked anything while I had it. Overall it's just a standard motherboard. I wouldn't push it too far but I'd say you could oc a bit.

It performs pretty well considering its semi-dated chipset. Overclocking to 4.2ghz still leaves the mosfets warm to the touch. I'm thinking of turning the hyper 212 90 degrees to have more air flow over the ram and mosfets for more incidental cooling. I want to try and oc more maybe 4.5ghz, but I don't want to push it too far. Also usb 3 is amazing.

ah thats okay then, i was having a it of temp issues last night with my cpu and chipsets - chipsets hit 65c cpu hit 50c with stock cooler so i'll definitely be upgrading that haha

I love budget builds like this where people find steals on parts like that CPU :) love it!

Budget builds are my absolute love, I love seeing what I can squeeze out of 300 - 500 bucks! :D

+1 for keeping it looking trashy with cables and for mis-matched ram sticks

btw my friends were telling me its impossible to mix ram, so you can?

  • 2 points

It isn't impossible. It just isn't recommended because of potential compatibility issues, but I haven't had any issues. 8gb is 8gb to me.

As long as they have the same frequency and timing, any two brands should be fine. The only reason it's risky is because some brands, like corsair, clock some of their ram higher than normal. Well done getting cheap 8gb!!
