Description

Build Goal The goal of this build was to create a system that was Ryzen 5 3600 and Radeon RX 5700 that could be water cooled in the future. As I bought the parts the day they were released, there were no water cooling blocks available.

Build Experience This build went off without any issues.

I was reminded that the CPU must be installed prior to installing the motherboard in the case if you are using a screw-in type CPU cooler. This is because the bracket that the cooler screws into will drop down below the level of the motherboard and you won't be able to screw it in.

I also noticed that the memory was underclocked, and I had to use the XMP feature of the motherboard (or manually set the frequency and timings) to get it to run at the advertised speed.

Components

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 Ghz 6-Core 12 Thread - Paid: $199.99 At 199.99 this CPU is a great deal. It matches the Intel i7-9700K in single threaded performance, exceeds in multi-threaded performance, and does it all with less power and almost a $150 lower price tag (at the time of this writing). Yes, one could buy the 3600x or the 3700x for even more performance, yet the Ryzen 3600 seems to be adequate for the majority of gaming workloads.

Happiness with purchase: 9/10 - Fantastic value. Kept my build price down significantly, and does everything I need. I sometimes wonder if I should have gone with a 2700X, though that would have inflated the build price.

Motherboard: MSI - MPG x570 Gaming Edge Wifi - Paid: $164.99 The primary features that I was looking for in a motherboard was the X570 chipset, so it will fully support the latest Ryzen CPUs, and on-board WiFi. As I will possibly vertically mount my graphics card in the future, I did not want a WiFi card in the PCI-e slot, nor use up one of the M.2 slots for a WiFi. I was seriously considering the MSI MPG x570 Carbon Pro WiFi to get the WiFi 6 capability, but as I won’t use SLI, the price didn’t seem worth it to me as I also don’t have a WiFi6 enabled router. All recent builds I have done for my friends and family have been with MSI boards. I’m really happy with them every time.

Happiness with purchase: 7/10 - If the Carbon Pro WiFi wasn’t out of stock, I likely would have bought it to future-proof for WiFi 6, although it would have been a bit of an unnecessary expense. I know I will be slightly regret this when I finally upgrade my router to WiFi6. That aside, the board is fantastic, and the overclocking features are very nice.

Graphics Card: Sapphire - AMD Radeon RX 570 8GB - Paid: $299.99 I wanted to give AMD a chance to win me over from team NVIDIA. I’ve had really good experiences with my NVIDIA cards in the past, but wanted to try out a full AMD build. Again the price performance is very good for this card. Driver support will be the deciding factor on whether it was a good purchase or not. I have experienced some crashes while playing Apex Legends, and hope those issues will get ironed out quickly.

I did overclock slightly (have since reverted to see if that was the cause of the crashes, though it appears not), and was able to score on the Firestrike benchmark of 20,419. Comparing that score to others that have the Ryzen 5 3600, it is right above the NVIDIA 2070’s and 1080’s, and right below the 2070 super’s and 2080’s. Again, half the price of a 2080 for slightly lower performance and no ray tracing. If the crashes are resolved, it will be a great value purchase.

Happiness with purchase: 5/10 - Game crashes are frustrating. Hopefully it’s just a driver issue that gets fixed. If that’s the case, this goes to a 9/10, but for now, I’m on the fence as to if this was a good purchase.

Memory: Corsair - Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4-3200 - Paid: $99.99 Normally a savvy buyer looking for the best bang for the buck, this purchase was entirely for the RGB. The semi-opaque nature of the housing for the LEDs cause it to glow properly, without the blinding effect that some RGB-ram has, or RGB-anything, for that matter. It really does look fantastic. I already have a Corsair keyboard, and was happy with the iCUE software, which seems to have a low impact on startup times and general performance, so I was fine continuing to buy into their ecosystem. Do note that it needs to be configured through their software.

I was able to overclock to 3333Mhz, but since backed that down as I was afraid it might be causing the crashes. (Again though, only with Apex Legends) I also considered buying 32GB as the prices are relatively low, but decided against it as nothing I do uses anywhere near 16GB, and it’s an easy purchase if I ever need more, and at that point, it will likely be even cheaper.

Happiness with purchase: 9/10 - I love the beautiful RGB and don’t mind running iCUE. I know it’s more expensive because of the RGB, but I accept that.

SSD: Inland - NVMe 1TB M.2-2280 SSD - Paid: $97.99 This is my first build using NVMe M.2 drives, and I am really happy with them. While they are slightly more expensive than their 2.5” counterparts, they are generally faster, and help keep the case tidy as cables do not need to be accounted for. The downside to M.2 drives is that most motherboards have at most two M.2 slots, which limits upgrades and leads to the need to purchase higher capacity drives.

The advertised read speed are very high at 3,100 MBps, which puts it just shy of the Samsung 970 Evo 1TB, at less than half the cost (~250$ as of the writing of this). Read speeds are more important than write speeds for gaming. Unlike content creators, most of the content gamers write to disk are game updates, and write speeds will be limited to their internet connection speed for the most part. Write speeds on this drive are advertised at a respectable 1,900 MBps.

Happiness with purchase: 10/10 - This drive seems to have fantastic value. If it holds up as I expect it will, it will have been a great purchase.

Case: Lian-Li - PC-011 Dynamic ATX Full Tower - Paid: $114.99 I love everything about this case. It’s my first case upgrade for my personal rig since ~2003. Yes, it’s been a while! Sitting slightly wider than the average ATX full tower, this case has the PSU behind the motherboard. My most recent build besides this one had the PSU below the motherboard, hidden behind a metal shroud, but wire management wasn’t as convenient, in comparison to having the PSU behind the motherboard.

The case is also designed with water cooling in mind, so much so, that completed build posts with the PC011-D it dominate the /r/watercooling subreddit. With space for more radiators than you will ever need, wire ties, rubberized wire grommets, the side and front panel tempered glass, USB-C support, fan meshes, rubber feet… the list goes on. All-in-all it feels like a really good case for the value, and looks fantastic. It’s a case that will showcase your components and build quality. Do note that the case does not come with fans, but as it’s used frequently in water cooling rigs, most people will be buying their own fans anyway.

Happiness with purchase: 10/10 - To reiterate, I love everything about this case.

Case Fans: Kingwin - 120MM Fan - Paid : $4.99 x 3 Since the case I went with didn’t have any fans, I picked up three 120MM fans that were the cheapest that I could get my hands on quickly. They seem to do their job well, are not terribly noisy, and will be eventually replaced when I convert to water cooling. Though, in hindsight I should have gone with a set of static pressure (SP) or hybrid fans that I eventually would use on a radiator. These will likely end their life in a parts box or in a future budget build.

Happiness with purchase: 7/10 - They are no-frills case fans that work adequately. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Power Supply: Corsair - RMx 750W 80+ Gold Fully Modular PSU - Paid : $119.99 For the PSU I was looking for something that was of a high quality, fully modular, 750W, and had two EPS connectors (the 8-pin PSU connector). This one checked all those boxes. I was hoping to use my existing CX600, but decided against it as it wasn’t fully modular, was a bit lower wattage than I wanted, and I would need to be swapping power supplies between two systems while I was getting the new one all setup. In truth, I could have run a 550W PSU, but wanted some extra buffer as I felt the PSU is something that could last me through a few iterations of my current build.

Happiness with purchase: 8/10 - I really like the unit, though I wasn’t expecting at first to shell out the cash for a PSU, and I bought it about $20 more than what I would have liked to, since it was a last minute purchase.

Part Reviews

At 199.99 this CPU is a great deal. 600W PSU should be sufficient, even for full load. Normally you'll run at much lower power draw, the maximum wattage is for when the system is running under full load.

Hi, how is the sound on the 5700 GFX card? I heard that blower cards can be really noisy but on the other hand they use a lot less power than the previous generation...

They can be noisy. Not as bad as previous generations, but if you have it pointing right at you, you will hear it.

My suggestion is if you don't wear headphones while gaming, then consider a non-blower style. If you wear headphones, you won't hear it, unless your head is right next to the exhaust.

I'll have to check temps at another time. The motherboard fan only kicks on when the temps get too high. I have actually never noticed it even on.

You may have made the right choice with the motherboard if all you wanted is WiFi 6. There's probably an M.2 wifi module under the IO shield that could be swapped for an AX200 module that's selling for $25 right now on Newegg.

Sick build. How are temps with stock cooler? I got this case after seeing it at Microcenter. I've never done water-cooling before... I have a 3900x I'm going to keep stock. Wondering if the wraith prism will do a decent job in this case if I have 3 intakes on side, 3 on bottom and 3 exhaust on top.... I'm scared to get an AIO because of horror stories of leaks ruining rigs. I love the look of this case though.

Yeah, I was hoping to overclock slightly to bring it within the 5700xt range. It did, and the overclock was likely not causing the crashes, as I still have them after reverting to stock speeds.
