Description

Wanted to freshen up my old socket 775 build originally with a Q6600 clocked @ 3.5GHz. I found an adapter mod using socket 771 Xeon CPUs on Overclock.net that I thought would do the trick.

Installed a Xeon E5450 @ 3GHz into my Asus P5K Premium MB and OC'd it to 4GHz at which point I thought the set-up deserved better cooling and a case refresh so I went with the Antec H600 Pro and Bitfenix Nova.

The CPU with the adapter mod came in at less than £25...my CPU Passmark went from 4800 on the Q6600 to over 6300 with the Xeon!

Its a HTPC hence the low end HD6450 which is more than adequate for streaming and browsing sessions.

The AIO has a pleasant blue led logo on the pump housing so I paired it with a cheap blue molex led strip.

The new case is decent...its a perfect size for an ATX MB. Build quality is fairly good for the budget price aside from the low rent plastic window which I replaced with a glass panel.

For around £100 I'm more than happy with the result!

Thanks for looking...

Wow for a PSU that's not fully modular you did an amazing job with cable management in general. Looks good!

Do you even have cables?

Hate cables anywhere on my build...went the extra mile to disappear them!

Mission accomplished; the lighting makes them invisible.

Are those cables custom sleeved or what?I love it,I have an old E4500 machine that I might look into reviving.Inspired by @light_circle :P

You're very kind...Not custom sleeved its just a cheap Evga 80+ 500W supply heavily restrained! The Xeon mod is nothing short of a revelation. Well worth considering...good luck.

The Xeon (with OC) is much faster and has a higher L2 Cache of 12MB then the Q6600. If light_cycle got the Xeon for a cheap price (or free!) then its worth swapping out the Q6600.

I agree, the cable management is very good considering the non-modular PSU.

Xeon is a special mod for 775 boards...the CPUs are pretty cheap, I guess stripped out of business servers...was a cheap performance jump from the trusty Q6600

You're right...got a discount from Amazon and fancied a play with an AIO is the plain truth. But before the E5450 I had a go with an X5460 which is 120W TDP and that ran extra hot especially when OC'd.
