SnowStorm

This is an update to previous build
Date Completed: ITS NEVER COMPLETE

However, the last part I put in was the motherboard. I got that 9/24/2015

A Little About Me

I work WEEKENDS... I work with computers and build computers for my family. It's what I'm good at and I feel like it's one of the few ways I can provide for them. Especially my parents. My son is only a couple months old but he'll be just as geeky as me.

4 years of craigslist and Fry's electronics promo code sales. I was able to get some of my parts with just craigslist and I got others when they went on sale. Some parts have $0 to it and I'll explain that in the parts list.

Also, I decided to paint my CPU Cooler and RAM because why not. I wanted it to be unique and my own. I'm sure there are many builds similar to mine. I guess my components have a history. I was worried that the paint would isolate the heat from dissipating but after I put the paint I ran it for a bit and used a laser thermometer to check. The heatsinks don't go over 40c while using a stress test on the ram. Also, my open hardware monitor showed it peak at about 45. Then again I just put it on so I'm gonna monitor it for a few days and see how it plays out.

Parts List - w/side story of purchase

CPU: i7-4770k Craigslist. I was able to get the 4770k and an asus motherboard for only $200. I was a little skeptical at first but when I got a text back from him after about 3 hours of purchase, he asked me if i was having any issues with it. Then told me to keep him updated so if I run into any problems to ask him.

CPU Cooler: Corsair H75 Craigslist. I honestly cannot recall when I got it but I do know it was for my previous build I sold. I wanted to OC my 8350 but I had the 212 Evo on it and never got around to replacing the cooler and OCing. I bought it for $50 and a meal from Micky-D's

MOTHERBOARD MSI Z97s Craigslist. My most recent purchase. I found it on CL and he was asking for 60. Was able to bring it down to 50.

RAM Corsair Vengeance 16GB Craigslist trade. A while ago I traded my Alienware Laptop for a midtower AMD FX-8350 build. The RAM was one of the parts I kept after selling the computer.

Storage 840 EVO Sale. I get promo codes to Frys Electronics and I got this for about $60+Tax.

WD GREEN 2TB Sale. The very first thing I owned in this build. This HDD was originally an external drive that I got at Fry's Electronics. However, with the limited space on the SSD I needed an extra drive where I can put bigger files that wasn't at the speed of USB 2. So my former roommate opened it up and I put it in my computer.

WD BLACK Sale. also from Fry's Electronics. I couldn't pass this offer. $40+Tax

VIDEO CARD EVGA GTX 680 Craigslist. Got it for 120 because the guy just upgraded to 970 3 way SLI.

It Will Happen Some Day...

CASE CM STORM SCOUT 2 ADVANCED Craigslist. The guy decided to go full tower and get rid of this one. He was asking 60. I brought it down to 40. The case is how i came up with the name.

PSU CORSAIR TX750 Craigslist. This is one of those parts that I kept from the FX-8350 build. It still works great. I dont really see a need to upgrade other than to get a modular.. However, I got really good at cable management that I dont really need to upgrade just for less cables.

FANS SP120 Sale. They went on sale for $20 for 2-pack. I said why not and bought 4 fans total. Then moved the h75 fans to the front of the chassis as intake.

KEYBOARD Razer Anansi My Dad found this at a goodwill for $6. I'm still saving up for a mechanical though.

If you guys have any questions just ask.

The story makes the build. +1

You didn't die getting the parts +1

You can clearly see that a lot of effort was put into this build. It looks great! I always love nice and clean builds which show that a lot of effort was put into them. You sir, are also a very frugal person, and a good haggler by the looks of it! Congratulations for featured, you deserve it after this awesome build!

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 7 points 28 months ago

Thanks! Wasn't expecting the feature honestly.

blackbishop 8 points 27 months ago

The effort you've put into bargain shopping, sourcing parts, customizing... really puts your build in its own class. Anybody with a big wallet can throw a bunch of high end parts into a case. What you've done is truly personal and honestly inspirational. Keep up the dedication, and of course, KEEP HAVING FUN.

Kudos, and thanks for the post!

gugu96 18 Builds 6 points 27 months ago

I agree with blackbishop here. That is the reason I only look at builds under 1000$. If you have 5000$ to spend on a computer I expect it to be completely out of mind and perfectly built. I tip my hat to those who work harder and squeeze their budget and go beyond to make their own computer.

PCIntake 6 points 28 months ago

This guy knows his cable management reallll well

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 3 points 27 months ago

Haha thanks. It's part of my job. I build servers and the psu wires are ridiculously long for how small and flat the build is.

[comment deleted by staff]
FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

That's something you just have to figure out I guess? What I do is like with sata cables i keep them flat together. Also, if you have to make a big bundles, what I do is I bundle wires individually then zip tie all of them together. With my excess wires I just shoved them under the HDD's. Also try to leave a little slack so when you bundle the cables you're not accidentally yanking the cable out. That's the best advice I can give you.. Good Luck! and Have fun!

Fantastic job on the build. With the custom paint and cable management, you really turned this thing into a functioning piece of art. I know it must have been fun to build! +1

A few things that might add to your over all aesthetic, would be to paint the GTX logo on the graphics card white. Probably more time to tape it than paint it, but that would look awesome. Also to either remove the PSU labels completely or print some custom labels. If you need help with a design file let me know.

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

I was going to paint the GeForce. But I ran out of tape... Haha

johngerges582 3 points 28 months ago

I was thinking about doing one of these.

Some guy on craiglist was selling 2 960's for $150

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 2 points 28 months ago

You gonna get it??

johngerges582 1 point 27 months ago

Well the guy already sold them so by the time I contacted him, they were gone.

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

:/ oh well. There's always going to be deals. I keep finding gtx 780s for around 200 but I don't need it. If I had a lower end card I would have went for it. Patience is key (: good luck!

Erolian 2 points 28 months ago

If I were to walk into your room and saw your machine, I will not be able to guess you got all those parts off craigslist and Fry's electronics. Absolutely fantastic build for cheap!

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

Thank you

SquareOreo 2 points 28 months ago

That is one seriously sexy looking build!

You should surround the radiator hoses with white electrical tape

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 3 points 28 months ago

Ooo good idea.

SquareOreo 1 point 27 months ago

How often shall you be upgrading Mr.Craiglist over there?Lol

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

Not sure. I just randomly look on CL and fry's promo codes if I see a good deal that's worth it. Then I'll go for it. Like I found a 290x for 150 but right now I'm not playing that many games so I'm still deciding if I should get it. How it would benefit me. All of that. The only reason I can think of is to give my 680 to my brother. And take his gpu and put it in my gf comp. then take her gpu and put it in my dads computer.

someta 4 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

ah, the circle of life for pc components...

Seriously cool build, btw. I'm looking at something similar, but with a Xeon.

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

Yeah the e3-1231 is basically an i7 without the igpu. Thanks (:

Lavins 11 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

No please, don't do that.

Also you know you can remove the H75's ring right? Use a plastic knife. You wouldn't have had to tape off the ring. :p

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Okay I won't haha. And good to know! Thanks

0_Oracle_0 2 points 28 months ago

Hey good for you. You did some awesome deal hunting!!

JAShadic 2 points 27 months ago

Good to see a new build with an old, but still reliable PSU!

I'm using that PSU in my crap gaming rig. Well it's not really crap, I just need to upgrade the 7 year old thing.

Apexier 1 point 26 months ago

that will make the hunky dory TX750 into an epic TX750 on the likes of AX760i :S

MrChrumb 2 points 27 months ago

Nice job. I wasn't quiet following what you were going for with the painting until I went through the pictures. What a difference! Very clean build, and nicely done.

I like how you found value, and took your time to build up the pc.

Thabeast 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

such a fascinating way to build! I'll have to try doing it this way sometime.....

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Have fun!

Lonfyre 2 points 27 months ago

This really reminds me of when I was younger and would build up rigs from salvage parts from people throwing out older rigs on my street. There's just something very satisfying of the hunt and gathering parts that have already seen use and breathhing new life into them. I admit I'm rather envious considering the beautiful work you've put together here.

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Thank you. It means a lot. Especially being the first one you've commented on.

DrTot 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

Corsair H75 for $50 and a meal from McDonald's xD +1

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Yeah I think it was $50. I got it a while ago. Haha

slingshot 2 Builds 1 point 28 months ago

whats that blue tape that u use to mask the paint

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 2 points 28 months ago

It's just painters tape from Home Depot. Doesn't leave any residue.

PumpSome 1 point 28 months ago

What was the deleted comment?

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Something along the lines of "this is a 'curseword' feature"

PumpSome 2 points 27 months ago

Thanks

PCclockWork 3 Builds 1 point 28 months ago

You heated your pads before removing them? I just took mine off as is and they came off without any residue like what I saw in one of your pics. (the deformations in the pads left by residue coming off could theoretically could impact performance?)

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

I took the residue off the ram and replaced the thermal adhesive tape

yeukhon 1 point 27 months ago

What kind of paints did you use?

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Right?? Haha

tejadam868 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

That cable management thoughhhh. +1 for super sexy clean fun time. What are your temps like with that cooler?

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

I only overclocked to 4ghz. It idles around 30-40. Depends on ambient(we turn off our ac on peak hours) and the highest I've really seen it was like 65(2 monitor+1 TV - running a movie+bf3+internet) gpu hit 60 as well.

drumbum47 1 point 27 months ago

How is building computers a way of providing for your family? Do y'all own a computer building shop or something? I'm confused, basically I want to know if you have the best job in the world haha

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Hahah that is a weird thing to understand. Yes I've built them computers and/or upgrade their old ones. Sometimes I upgrade there old ones and sell it for them. That's basically it if that makes sense. I mean yeah there are other ways I obviously provide for them but this is something I'm passionate about to help them with. No we don't have a computer shop haha that would be cool(we do have an antique shop) My job is to build really big servers btw. Some take me 6 hours to build and others take 10. But hey I get paid for it and I like it.

redrubberpenguin 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

Just a suggestion - you can take apart the GPU shroud to access the Geforce logo, and sand off the top layer of the logo to get rid of the green. That'll turn it white to match the rest of your build!

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Thanks!

cristianogomezx 1 point 22 months ago

I know this is a build from a few months ago, but i was wondering what you used to paint the cpu cooler and ram sticks

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

I think it was this one: http://amzn.to/24Wb4zB

Shivers3rd 1 point 19 months ago

Where on this planet did you get that case? I've been looking for a straight week for that case in the same color but I can't find it at all anywhere. All I can find is the standard color.

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 16 months ago

I know this is late but I just came across it on Craigslist.

[comment deleted by staff]
FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Well. Unfortunately, I can't afford the best.

bagboybrown -2 points 27 months ago

There's cheaper air coolers that are better than that, all I was suggesting. I'm not sure why they even make 120/140mm rads. It's embarrassing.

piemancoder 2 points 27 months ago

Because to get an air cooler with that performance, they cost around $70, in my experience. Also, they look really cool.

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

Oh see. Now that you clarified that, I understand. I got this cooler a while ago and I just haven't gotten rid of it. Since I already had this cooler, then what's the point of getting a new one. Just from my perspective. If I didn't have the h75 then I would have gotten the 212 Evo just cuz it's cheap for the performance. But if you think about it, the smaller aio coolers are great for compact builds like in m-itx cases(example:Antec isk600) that wouldn't guarantee the space or size of say a noctua nh-d14.

FunnyRock submitter 2 Builds 5 points 28 months ago

Yeah.. Honestly, there are better builds out there no doubt. I enjoy looking at those custom water loops. I hope one day I make enough to do so myself. I wasn't expecting the feature, honestly. However, I don't make that much money and make do.. I couldn't be more proud of myself of my build and I'm so grateful for what I have. Considering 4 years ago I started off with a Dual Core AMD and a Sapphire 5670. The only thing I'm more proud of making than this build, is my Son. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and try to look forward to those Far Superior builds!!!

piemancoder 4 points 27 months ago

You are seriously one of the coolest people on this site. We need more people like you, who even if someone says something not very polite, you still just explain the reasoning, keep your cool, are very friendly, and you wish them a good weekend. I thank you for making this site a better place.
