Description

4th of July sale...... I bought an i7 7700k. Figured if I'm going to upgrade I'm going all the way to 4.2ghz probably not going to run a full benchmark. Going from g4560 to 7700k, self explanatory I bet.

After benchmarks, I found a lot to be the same... So I decided to actually put on some games and play.... Wow what a difference. The 7400 probably would of been just fine I just never fully tested it just benchmarks

My Vault 303 (Fallout build) Vertical GPU Build

This is my bedroom computer. My second computer you could say. I mostly us it for internet, watch late night shows and occationally game.....but not too often. My main pc has a 6700k/1080 GTX build. I just did the vertical gpu and changed the cpu to an i5 but the performance wasn't worth the price so I put back the g4560. You have to own a g4560 to appreciate it I guess. I love this cpu and I'm sticking with it!!

CPU: just purchased an i7 7700k This was my write up on the g4560 I chose the g4560 because I was curious...I had an overclockeded FX 6300 and wanted to see if the dual core can kick its azz and it holds up a little more yes!! I It was $65...I can upgrade later if needed, but for now ....and for me... This works perfect! (I actually just purchased an i5 7400 cpu. I put it in and tested it out. Before I bought it I tried to research it and couldn't find much but opinions, but in the end it wasn't worth the $185 price tag when it clearly doesn't do much more than the $65 g4560 in my computer. So I boxed it up and sent it back and decided to keep the g4560. It plays my games and videos just fine in 1080p)

Motherboard: MSI B250M Arctic... Well I liked the design. Goes well with the white. I'm not in need of an overclocking motherboard.

Ram: Same as the mobo...I went with 16gb Ballistix grey and white combo that matched the motherboard.

GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6GB ROG STRIX OC Edition ....Plasti dip used. I could of saved some money, yes and bought an EVGA or AMD, or the 3gb model, I know...I spent $305 w/ $30 mail-in rebate. I just liked the look and it seemed faster than the other 1060's....money wasn't a concern...my 970 GTX was 80c at load this is 62c Gaming mode: 1620 MHz Boost Clock OC mode: 1873 MHz Gaming mode: 1847 MHz

GPU Vertical Mount:

Vertical Graphics Card Holder by Ice Wolf - Cooler Master Store

EZDIY NEW PCI Express 16x Flexible Cable Card Extension Port Adapter High Speed Riser Card-25cm from Amazon

CPU Cooler: I purchased the Thermaltake 3.0 360mm liquid cooler for only $70, I know it is overkill but the 303 case screams for a 3 fan radiator and this was the perfect deal and I like the aesthetics of it! With Thermaltake 3.0 temps peaked 47c on benchmark!!

Benchmarks: (Average FPS) All Highest settings & no vsync (I used MSI Gaming App to force cpu in Gaming Mode@ 3.5ghz) g4560/1060 6gb vs i5 7400/1060 6gb Quad Core vs Dual Core Hyperthreaded Processor.....

Part Reviews

CPU Cooler

Nice and big. Slim too. Almost hidden

Motherboard

Very nice non-oc motherboard. Could use more usb slots in the back, but looks really good. Very mild led lights on board. Bios is okay.

Memory

Decent ram that matched my MSI B250M MORTAR ARCTIC Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard. Could be cheaper.

Memory

Decent ram that matched my MSI B250M MORTAR ARCTIC Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard. Could be cheaper.

Storage

Ive had this for years now. No problem, Nice and fast!

Video Card

Amazing gpu. Nice Aura RGB lighting on shroud and 3 fans to keep it around 50c.

Case

Love this case. A good case to display great components. Requires a lot of aftermarket fans because it doesn't come with any but most would buy new ones anyway

Power Supply

The CX500 can be put down by most. Ive been using it for almost 4 years and no problems. I ran AMD oc'd and 970 gtx on this thing with no problem. So it works my low power intel and gpu fine

Case Fan

The best white non-led fan on the market. I wanted white and no led's and that's hard to find

how did you not benchmark fallout 4? lol, nice build +1

Looks weird seeing such a high end cooler cooling such a low end chip haha.

Awesome looking build man

Yeah I got a good deal on it. I know not needed but I like it

Nice to see the stats on the g4560 vs 7400, seems like the Kaby Lake Pentium is one of the few bones Intel gave to gamers on a budget.

I almost went with a G4600 but ended up getting a deal on a Ryzen 1400 instead.

Yeah I actually bought the 7400 out of curiosity. Wanted to know if it was worth the 3x price tag and it isn't for me

Some cool with stock coolers and some go bigger. This case and top fan setup seems to be made for a 360mm cooler and I found one for $70 and couldn't pass up on it.... I like it

Really nice build. I really like what you have done with the white color scheme, I really like the all-white builds, Great part choice. I also like the vertical GPU mount, it really brings the build together, I also like the SSD sticker, where did you get that?

  • 2 points

Thank you very much. I appreciate it truly!! I actually didn't have to mod it at all, just paint. The case has no dividers between the pci brackets, so no cutting needed. I purchased this:

That looks perfect, I've been trying to find a solution without cutting to much unreversable damage to my case to mount my gpu vertically. I only found a dual slot from mountianmod but CM came to the rescue with 4 slots. Thank you

Nice build... sees logitech trackman well i'm sure there's a good reason for thi- faints

  • 1 point

There is a reason they make a trackman... Me I guess!! I absolutely LOVE trackballs. I've used them for years. I know it unconventional for most but that's what I like

  • 1 point

but... like... especially in shooters... they are less accurate. sure, you could get used to them... but arent mice just way less of a hassle? I was just thinking maybe you dont have enough space but that doesnt seem like the case.

I use the 29" wide for working on the pc and I game on the 55" in a big chair with an Xbox controller. I don't do online competitive gaming

Dude! How did you get you're card mounted like that!? I have the the 1080 strip and the black inwin 303, I'm getting my parts to run a custom water loop but if I can figure out how to mount my card like that It will change my loop. What parts do I need etc. thank you! Build looks super sweet btw!

  • 3 points

YES!!! Fellow 303 owner!! okay lets get you vertical!

Get one of these...... VERTICAL GRAPHICS CARD HOLDER BY ICE WOLF I think there site is down until after the 4th of July

And get a good riser cable. I purchased this EZDIY High Speed Riser Card They have 9cm or 25cm.... I bought the 25cm. It's long but it tucks behind, 9cm might be too short...

That's it. It was actually easy. Been wanting to do this for awhile... Good luck!!

  • 3 points

The EZDIY is working good for me with no issues but it is a little tight if you look at picture 12. The riser cable bends and hits the bottom of case. Not sure if itll be an issue. I dont think so

Look at this cable. It looks shorter...... Premium Gold Plated 16x PCI-E Extension Shielded Cable Riser (19cm)

  • 1 point

Very nice. Curious about fans, though. The side view shows 6 fans (1 rear exhaust, 2 bottom intake, 3 on the radiator), but the parts list has 8. Where are the others? On the top? On the front?

  • 1 point

Good question. There are 2 Thermaltake fans on the rear inside of the case for a push pull on my overly excessive cooler on a pentium haha. Figured if I got it I'll use it

Thank you! I was actually doing the benchmarks to show that the g4560 can hang with a lower end i5. Also to justify when people yell at me for my cpu choice

Yep. The 1060 is good! I tried to talk my wife into going with it for hers to save cost.

I also found that the ezdiy was the best one. No problems with mine so far. Did you have to bend/ fold it at the bottom? looks tight

It is very tight. I folded it. Benchmark a gaming hasn't been problematic but if it becomes I can blame it on the fold

hey, is that passmark test of the entire computer or the cpu alone? just wondering cause my little amd fx 4350 got 5549 when my entire build gets more like 3000 or below

oh and i like it much, +1 of course

and if i could've gone back and redone my build i would've gotten a pentium like that, wasnt as educated on pc stuff back then

  • 0 points

I'm not sure. I just clicked benchmark on the program both times. Didn't change any settings... I'm not familiar with how the program works but your cpu still is a 4 core 4.2ghz unlocked and the pentium is dual 3.5ghz with hyper and 7400 is quad 3.0ghz and both locked so any similarities In a test doesn't surprise me...

Thank you!!

  • 1 point

okay I had to look and this is what I found about a passmark score

The overall Passmark Rating is not an average or a sum of the sub scores. This rating is limited by the weakest component in the system. So even if you had an extremely really fast CPU but only average memory and HDD then your overall score would still only be average.

  • 1 point

Wow. Those benchmarks really surprised me. I guess in this case the core count doesn't really matter. I have put together a part list with an i3 7350K but some people have told me it would make the 1070 perform "not up to it's potential". But now after seeing this, I'm thinking that it wouldn't be too bad.

  • 1 point

Yeah, I hated to send the cpu back but the scores were way to close. I'll go with an i7 layer if I want to upgrade

But honestly I would use a 1060 for my g4560 or an i3, but the 1070 is a big jump from 1060 and I would go higher so it doesn't hold the 1070 back

I put a 6600k and an Asus in my son's pc....

And yes to all the haters of my g4560, I bought... And gave my son a 6600k and I used the g4560

  • 1 point

And a good guide is to go to 3DMarks website and punch in what cpu and gpu ur using and see the difference in people's scores. I did and a 1070 with my little cpu is not a good idea so an i3 probably the same

  • 1 point

Okay. I could understand a slight bit of performance inefficiency, but still that is pretty amazing that a Pentium dual core can come close to an i5 quad core in performance. if you look at my many part list plans, you could see that I have done an i3, i5, and i7 version for trying to decide what to do. I'd probably go with the i5, but if I have enough money to just buy an i7, I'd do that. But what you have done is pretty amazing and I guess gives the people that have a bit less money to spend some hope that they can still run good games on a budget processor. And the 1060 is a fantastic mid range GPU with very good performance. I have one in my current desktop and I love it's performance.

  • 1 point

The 7400 is quad 3.0ghz with 3.5 turbo and the g4560 is dual with hyper at 3.5ghz. Most of the games and unigine benchmarks were the same and that did 100% surprise me too.

A higher ghz chip like a 7600k would probably be much better than the 7400 I chose. Maybe next time. Good luck

  • 1 point

I think that it is awesome that in only one of your benchmarks it dropped below 60FPS but was still just as high as you'd ever really need it. (59FPS)

Sick build! Love the white color scheme. So much that I have a build with the same look, which also includes an asus strix card which I would love to be painted white to match the rest of the build. I was wondering how you went about doing that, and also if you think it was a good decision to use plasti dip over some kind of heat resistant paint. Also, nice job on including benchmarks that was a really good idea! +1

  • 1 point

Thank you very much. I used the plasti dip because it is what I had in hand. Was using it for a body kit on my car. I've painted card before just using regular paint. The gpu shell doesn't get hot and if you touch your backplate it usually cool to warm. I don't think special paint is really needed... But that's me

  • 1 point

And I included the benchmarks just cause I knew people would get all bent out of shape over my g4560 which they still did and wanted to show that my cpu choice isn't as bad as people think. It ran almost or just as good as a low end i5 for $65

  • 1 point

this build is just stupid, you could have WAY better components with 900usd, why are you even watercooling a g4560? WITH A 360 RAD, this is just so wrong. stuff like this is why console users are always saying you need a 3k pc to play anything.

  • 1 point

I have a solid machine in my main room with a 1080gtx and i7 6700k, this is my bedroom pc that I don't require bigger parts. And when I game, not very often, it does fine for me. The 1060 is a good 1080p card and the dual hyperthread g4560 has been good for me. Benchmarks along side the 7400 if you look at my results. I bought a 7400 and decided to stick with my pentium.... Thank you

  • 1 point

the point is, spending 900usd on a g4560 + 1060 system is, stupid. but if you like wasting money like that... what can i do

Thank you for concern about my money. My pc runs everything just fine 60fps on 1080p monitors. I have no issues with it. Good day.

  • 1 point

And to educate you. The g4560 is a dual 3.5ghz w/ 4 threads (just like an i3) and the 1060 gtx is one of the best 1080p cards. I am not In need of anything more.

Hey look! Another 303 owner. Welcome to the family :)

And the pentium is a great chip. Cheap and amazing for gaming. But don't dis the i5-7400, it's meant for gaming and handling graphics, the pentium is not meant for programs like cinebench and Photoshop. Il make it simple, Pentium: Great for gaming and costs a heck lot less. I5-7400: Meant for more design things. In your case you are a gamer so the pentium is perfect. Anyways Great Build +1

I'll check out ur rig...

Wasn't dissin the 7400 just bought it and it didn't overly outperform the g4560 enough for me to spend $189 when I had a g4560 on hand. Was hoping for a little bit more when I benchmarked

OK I have to say I should of given that 7400 a chance.. I got a 7700k now and did benchmarks had same results. Same fps in many games...

But the actual game play... I never gave the 7400 a chance and this 7700k is stutter free on my games so far

Awesome build over all, but considering you have a b250 mobo I would have gone with a non k 7700, since you can't overclock anyway

  • 1 point

The price difference was not that much, like 20, and the K is 4.2ghz w/4.5ghz turbo and non K is 3.6ghz.... Figured if I can't oc I might as well get the fastest one.

Thank you

  • 1 point

And crap, Newegg shows the 7700k @ 309.99 vs 7700 @ 304.99 only $5 more for .6ghz bump... That's better than what I paid though

Did you custom paint the video card? Or did I miss a special edition

I couldn't get a hold of a HoF card here in the US and loved the 3 fans cards, Asus and zotac. So I plasti dipped it. I love the look of the Asus strix

Lovely build bro. I'm currently purchasing all the components i need or my first build. I'm heavily considering vertically mounting my cpu but i don't think its going to be as east as yours was. Wish me luck!

Thank you. It was easy in this case just because the pci slots had no dividers and the bracket was easy. I also did it in this build with a phanteks evolv case https://pcpartpicker.com/b/7fyXsY It wasn't as easy but it was easy. Try to get bracket from the cooler master site and it'll be easy

As soon as I get everything purchased and built :P I’ve been holding back on building a pc for years so I figured that if I just bought a gpu then I would have to get the rest lol

I just put up the rebuild with my new gpu

Dang that looks sick. Especially with the vertical mounted gpu. How’d you do that and does that work with most cases?

  • 1 point

Thank you. It is a vertical mount bracket from cooler master cmstore.com called... Something wolf. Its in my write up description I believe. You could use it with most mid tower cases just not the micro/mini cases. Needs enough pci slots bracket... You can check out this too

Why did you get a overclockable cpu with a b series MOBO. You could seriously OC with a liquid cooler

  • 1 point

Many reasons I guess. This build was... was my secondary build. Started with a g4560 and a 1060. Never meant for it to evolve. My other rig is a 6700k and a 1080 with nzxt x62 (not even oc'd) so I'm not into oc'ing more into cooling. I wanted the better cpu and the K version was $15 more so I went with that one. Oddly enough, I delided the 7700k too because of high temps even stock w/ 360mm rad. I know... Stupid!! But my 1080ti/7700k combo plays great for me

hi there! i was planning on doing the same thing on my gpu but with a different case(inwin 101) and gpu mount(coolermaster universal mount) do you think it would work?

also, nice build! all the white lol

It looks like it would work just as easy. The right size and there looks to be no metal dividers in pci.

you spent $1400 and got a g4560 with a 1060 this is a good example of how to waist your money

  • 0 points

I can always upgrade if I feel the need. I tried an i5 7400 and it performed a hair better than my g4560 so I don't need. If I wanna play a game that'd hard to run on my g4560 I'll go and use my other pc that has a 6700/1080gtx, Thank you

  • 2 points

my proble is that you spent 1400 dollars and with that you could have gotten like an i5 paired with a 1080

  • 2 points

Look, I understand you have a problem... I own an i7 6700 and a 1080 Hybrid Which I game on... This is a hobby for me & some too. I like to build. I am an enthusiast and it doesn't always mean 1080's and i5's

Not every computer requires a 1080 and i5. If you look at my prices, take away the dual external drives, the price of my mouse and keyboard, the fans I had to purchase for the case, the $55 bracket and riser cable, the $30 psu extension kit, etc it wasn't $1400 for just the build. I'll adjust my prices to make you happy honey!!

And maybe when we get married you can be more concerned with how I spend my money ;)

Have a good day sweetheart.

Yes.. Yes I did. I seem to game just fine with this when I have to. But this is not my main build.

i can game fine too with a 10 yr old cpu if i put everything on lowest settings.

You underestimate that pentium... it's basically a i3 at half the price, and it can handle anything other processors can, maybe a little slower but it can.

  • 2 points

Thanx Sam... IDK if people just are not educated enough on this chip. They see dual core and dismiss it. But you are 100% right. 3.5Ghz Dual core with 4 threads. And it runs most games 60fps on 1080p which I game with similar to the i3

and I don't "put everything on lowest settings."
