Description

Alright guys!

So i decided a couple of months back that i needed something new to play with. My laptop was starting to fail, it was overheating so that no heat pad could keep it cool, the keyboard died and the hard drive was starting to go.

I had no clue about doing my own build only that it could be cheaper, as you can build up as you have the money and that you know exactly what is going in to the case. So i spent some time trawling the net looking for advice and tips then found this wonderful place, where i have spent the last couple of months sneaking around looking at all the magic i've seen produced on here, learning from all your words and pictures. If i've learnt nothing else, its that you all love pictures, so i thought i would throw up mine too as a mini thanks for all the help you guys throw out to one another....sorry they're not the best, im no photographer.

Anyway my build. I know its not the most future proof and will require some aditions in the next couple of years....(The SSD and GTX 1060 will be added next pay day and i will update for you all) but i went for what i thought was relitivly cheap to suit my needs, knowing that as much as i love to sit and play games, i don't have infinate time so i didn't need to throw together a world killer.

It went together quick and easy really, the only pain was sitting the case controls in their correct places on the board, the motherboard instructions weren't too great on that front but got their after a couple of go's. Im happy with how it turned out perhaps the case could have a been easier on cable management but for £35 i can't complain (im also sure and expert could of done better) and the only thing im really looking forward to now is getting my hands on the 1060.

UPDATE:-

So I spent some time, did a little saving, a bit of thinking and decided to limit my budget at £600 that leaves me around £60 to add my 240gb ssd.

Originally I had my heart set on the 1060 gpu but it would of thrown me over my budget and I'm quite stubborn with pennies. I did some searching, watched some videos and looked at what I really needed and I'm quite happy with the RX470. My biggest drain is WoW and on ultra preset 10 with mid range AA I'm hitting 53-57fps in open world and 5mans. I'm sure when I try I'll lose 20fps in raids but with what I've seen so far I'm happy to turn off the AA or drop down a preset. The only other games I really play are Civ and Football manager so I'm sure this little gem will fill my needs for now.

It's a good starter PC! When you get the money I would recommend you get a GTX 970 or the 1060 as said above.

Thanks! yeah definately going to be throwing in a 1060. the irony is i guided my mrs to a refurbed gtx960 on ebay for her pc, i didnt think she would just buy it but as soon as she did, my wallet started twitching so i went out and got all the bits except the gpu and ssd. If she didn't buy it, i would of waited 4 weeks and got the full build with the 1060 and an ssd

Lol. The build that I'm possibly going to do is gonna use the GTX 970 or 1060. Those to are great cheap little GPU's. My CPU that I'm probably gonna use is either the Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz or the Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz But this is a "Great" Build for the money! Good work!

Would you recommend the 970 or the 1060 over, say, the 480? I'm looking to build in this budget and while I intend to upgrade to a 1080 in the (somewhat distant) future, I'm looking for a good interim card.

In my personal opinion I would go with the 1060. This benchmark that I looked has a slightly higher benchmarks (Link: http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-vs-AMD-RX-480/3639vs3634 ) The 480 is not a bad GPU but you can pay a little more and get the 1060. The 480 has a Slightly better peak texture detail. May ask what you need it for?

Gaming till I can afford a 1080.

Nice! That's a really good GPU! I would get if it was the price of the 1060 or the 480.

UPDATE: The RX 480 is better in DX12 and Vulkan Games

I completely agree with you. However depending on how distant the future is, it could be worth getting a refurbished 960 or 970 for the time being. It's relatively easy to spot a good deal in online stores or eBay and they should both handle most current titles on high to ultra....if it's just an interim investment

Very true. The 970 should be a great alternative til' the 1080. And again it depends on what games your going to play.

No point in getting a 970 when the nitro+ version of the 470 is basically a cooler version of a 970.

Great budget build but why did you have thermal compound when the stock cooler already has it.

I am not sure why they did this, but the stock thermal compound is always terrible, and can actually cause the CPU to run warmer than if you clean it off, then apply your own thermal compound.

I know that they're already on the stock cooler and without and k processor it wasn't really needed. i think i just read way too many comments saying that the stock paste isn't the greatest but will do it's job. Plus with it being a first build i couldn't help thinking in the back of my mind that at somepoint something could go wrong and i may need to reseat the cpu

Ok. It's always better to be on the safe side.

Good job on not getting a Z170 mobo with a locked CPU. Why the mid case though? Everything looks tiny inside.

The case was dirt cheap. It's nothing special but I liked the look of it. At £35 I wasn't going to say no. It came loaded with 3 fans and room for two more. But ultimately with cases I guess a lot of it is personal taste....I've always been told I don't have much! Haha!

Please keep it polite. Also, the person you're responding to was praising OP for getting an H110 board with a locked CPU. You may have misread it as sarcasm.

No, the other user did not use caps. It was strictly a comment praising the choice of motherboard and asking about the reason behind the case size. That's it. You, meanwhile, called that person an idiot. That is not acceptable even if the user had spoken in all caps.

No need to delete your original comment. I already did so.

Thanks dude, I'm very pleased with it and I'm confident it will do what I need. I just need that 1060 now.

Only problem is that I've got itchy fingers now, I feel like I want to build something else, it's so much fun....it feels like an addiction
