Description

Well where do I begin with this...So this PC was built in mind for something to compliment my PS4 and my Macbook Pro. Considering I still have 2 old PC base units that needed retiring (AMD Opteron S939 and a Q6600!) I wanted to build something that would last a while with the odd upgrade coming in. So here are my choices and reasons;

Corsair Air 240 MicroATX Mid Tower Case - Haha...Great case to build in. It's not supposed to fit my card but I'm glad it does..More on the case fiasco later!

Corsair 760W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply - Bargain for the price...Especially when its around £130!..Don't think the lad on eBay actually knew what he was selling brand new haha.

ASRock X99E-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA2011-3 Narrow Motherboard - You might be asking why have I gone Mini ITX when I could have gone MicroATX..More on that later...Anyway, cracking little board, unusual socket (Narrow ILM) mind you and some odd layout (fan header next to graphics card slot!) but its a cracking piece of kit. Great feat of engineering..Overclocking is reasonable too

Intel Core i7 5820K - Got this on an Aria back to school offer. I was contemplating Skylake at the time but when I saw this price it was too good to not take it up. Having said that, I went to Hong Kong in November and saw it for as little as £230!..Easy come easy go I guess....Currently have a 1ghz overclock to 4.5ghz at present :)

Asetek Liquid Cooler Intel 2011 NARROW Retention Ring Kit - Obtained from eBay Astek store. You need this to pretty much use a AIO water cooling kit.

NZXT Kraken X31 69.5 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler - Yeah could have gone for a 240 blah blah blah. Not had any issues. Idle 22c and max I've seen is 59c..did actually initially have a X41 but more on that later too...Yeah it was a little of a nightmare

Kingston FURY 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory - Nuff said, it works

Sapphire Radeon R9 Fury 4GB Tri-X Video Card - I bought this in Hong Kong and then it proved to be the underpinning nightmare of everything. Works well. Yeah you get the odd coil whine in benchmarks but in actual games, I can't hear any.

The SSD's - Initially just went with a 480GB and then 960GB came on sale on Cyber Monday so bobbed that too.. Will be for games mainly. Everything else like recordings, photos, will be shafted onto my personal file server (18TB haha)

Noctua Fans Initially just went with the NF-P12..Amazing..Ended up buying another P12 and then 2 F12's...The F12's are in push pull and the P12's operate as case fans..One bringing air in and the other pushing out from the top :)..These are expensive fans but they are good..I mean literally quiet as hell and better than the stock Corsair bollocks that came with the case

Right so enter the nightmare...

The Problems

So initially I had a Corsair 380T case given to me essentially and I thought it would fit in the R9 Fury and the Kraken X41 ...Didn't fit either..Turns out the design of the card made it a 2mm too big and the X41 didn't like the 380T mounting points for its radiator..So.....

Figured the 380T would come in use for another project one day....So I needed to get a case....Enter Fractal Design Core 500....Great case...Everything fitted...well sorta...The X41 mounted fine but as soon as put the case panel back on, because it flexes a little, it grinded against the R9 Fury fan and stopped it from spinning.

So that was a problem...Contacted Fractal about flexing, didn't even respond so I sent that back for a refund...Next up...Thermaltake Core V21..After watching KitGuru's review, I thought I'd give it a bash..Case was bigger than I thought and I measured up prior to ordering and it felt flimsy as all balls to work in..Really didn't like it so guess what...Yeah I returned it.

Dark hours indeed..PC parts here but can't build into a decent case. Yeah I could have gone full ATX but I wanted to save space as the amount of tech I have I'm literally mounting things to the wall to make room for this PC....Enter the Corsair Carbide Air 240..Rest is history!

Future Upgrades

  • Cablemod cables
  • New Keyboard//Mouse
  • New Monitor to replace my ageing LG 24"
  • Custom Loop maybe?
  • Bat Signal to go on top of case!...Yeah I'm a Batman fan

Been a rough ride..last build yonks ago, out of practice I guess, but I'm back to the PC Master Race again

Any questions request on extra photos, feel free to ask

Awesome build awesome choice on team red for the GPU. 6 core processor, probably my dream build. But, +1 for the case best of all. Love that thing.

Great build. All top notch parts. To bad that you couldn't find an ITX case that worked for you. Except for your better GPU, this is similar to my build.

The wheels are in motion to go to a Silverstone SG13 when a GPU upgrade is needed. Everything should feasibly fit...well bar the amount of fans

Solid parts. Great to see another AMD GPU build. +1. The Noctua industrialPPC 2000/3000 PWM fans would have looked better with your build imo.

I thought this too but I watched Linus Tech Tips video on it and you have to do some meddling to get the fan speeds down...Didn't want to mess with it.

I don't like the colour scheme of the Noctua's but the job they do is amazing..I guess I could spray paint it and make it black?

Yea they do I had a couple but of the beige ones before and traded them for the IndPPC... being PWM they have access to a lower start voltage due to how PWM works (my theory, correct me if I'm wrong)....I've got 3x 3000RPM fans and they never go above 820RPM... although you hear them spin up during start-up before the BIOS setting kicks in to tame them.

It takes an analytical mind and patience to set them up, I must confess. I've used the 3 fan headers on my mobo to control them only in bios to set the maximum fan speed when CPU temp is up to 50o celsius after which it ramps up linearly.

I respect Linus but no one knows it all..lol

The more I think about spray painting the more tempted I am to do it. With the temps I've got I'm happy with the fans.

Re Linus, I stumbled on their channel by accident. I generally keep to real world forums such as OC3D

I need to try out this spray painting myself as I see is quite popular in the PC modding world....

Not too bad of a build, good luck with your future upgrades, however a custom loop may not be necessary for... wait, what do you use this for?

I want that bat light from eBay..Probably the next thing I get tbh.

Custom Loop I have no real need for but it would be nice to have one....I'm just using this for gaming mainly and facial expression rendering.

Hi, may I know how can you use the kraken x31 on this mobo cause the socket is Narrow ILM? Do you have to mod the mounting?

Hey,

You need the Narrow ILM Mounting bracket adapter

I got mine from eBay

Once I bought the Fury I had considered swapping it because of the fit in case issues, but stuck with it. Didn't want to go Nvidia as they don't play well with Open source from what I read
