Description

This build replaces my ten year old system, which i mainly use as a work environment and for collecting mass amounts of pictures (lightroom). Every now and then one of my (mostly older) games is started...

So i decided to not buy a dedicated graphics card and just rely on the Radeon Vega 11.

While building the new system (which was really easy) i stumbled into two minor problems:

  • the builtin case fans (with fixed rpm) are a tad too loud, so i ordered the two replacements from Noctua, which are really(!) silent

  • the second M.2 slot is deactivated, when using a CPU with Radeon Vega integrated GPU

The second problem was quite a bummer :-( I lastly managed to solve it, by buying an adapter card (glotrends M.2 PCIe NVMe/AHCI SSD zu PCIe 3.0) - because i didn't want to replace the second M2.SSD with an SATA one.

After having sorted out the problems, my operating system and programs can live on the 250GB SSD, photos etc are located on the second 1TB SSD and the remaining 4TB storage can be used for backups and rarely used files.

One note on the DDR4 memory: i decided to buy the pricier G.Skill with CL14 to be sure to get a Samsung B-die, which should work better with the AMD chipset. I can't say if the cheaper memory wouldn't work - but the CL14 memory definitely works at the advertised speed and latency (actually also a little faster OC'ed).

So, if you look at the total price of this build ... its not really low budget, because i chose to get quality parts (and i do think, this pays off in the overall feeling, while using this system). If you don't want to spend that money, you could cut the price into half by getting cheaper components - but that would be a complete other (low budget) build.

What i like about this build:

  • its really silent, nearly inaudible

  • its very reactive (speedy SSDs, fast memory, enough CPU power)

  • it looks quit nice, very clean

Thanks for reading this :-)

Part Reviews

CPU

Great and fast CPU for my work environment. With an integrated GPU it is really low budget - actually I am blown away by the value you get for the price.

In combination with the Noctua cooler it is very silent.

I stumbled across an incompatibility I didn't expect: the asus mainboard deactivated the second M.2 slot when using a Radeon Vega GPU!

CPU Cooler

Very nice and silent cpu cooler!

It is large but fits into the define c case; can be mounted in two directions - whichever fits better with the memory bars.

The installation is straight forward (keep in mind to install the mount before you assemble the mainboard in the case).

CPU (Ryzen 5, 2400G) idles @ ~30°C and under stress ~55°C

Motherboard

The B450 boards are compatible with a Radeon Vega CPU (without bios update). It is looking nice and provides a really good sound chip, compared to the lower priced boards.

I stumbled into an unexpected incompatibility between the second M.2 port and the Radeon Vega integrated GPU. The second M.2 port is disabled with this CPU! So i needed to buy an additional adapter card M.2 to PCIe.

Memory

This memory chips are based on a samsung b-die, which are said to be most compatible with the Ryzen CPUs / AMD chipset.

The memory has really fast specs with 3200MHz @ CL14 and works in my system at the advertised speed (actually also a little faster).

... and also it has a nice look :-)

So, the only downside is the price.

Storage

Lightning fast storage. Boot to windows login (including bios post screen) is about 10 seconds. Provides low latencies for really fast program load times.

250GB seems to be more then enough for operating system, programs and also smaller games.

Storage

Lightning fast storage. Boot to windows login (including bios post screen) is about 10 seconds. Provides low latencies for really fast program load times.

Storage

Does its job (hopefully reliable ... the next years).

Case

Nice looking, well designed case. Cabel management is up to current standards. The case fans are fixed RPM and silent - but hearable ...so i replaced them with some quality Noctua case fans.

Overall very happy with this case.

Power Supply

Does a good job ... and lives up its name - it's very quiet! Well more power then needed for this build (w/o dedicated GPU).

Case Fan

Really really silent. With an optimized RPM curve you get an inaudible system. Seem to be well built - quality parts.

Yeah the 970 evo is super fast, intresting to see such an expensive build w/o a graphics card but I suppose it makes sense with your needs, very clean

I like the part selection, should work well for you for years.

So you had no issues installing the Noctura cooler with this mobo? I'm upgrading to a 2700x and pcpartspicker said I may need to contact noctura about extra mounting parts?

Sorry for the delayed response, i'm not very active in this forum.

I had no issues installing the Noctua cooler with the mobo, the process is straight forward.

Good luck

Is this true? Was there a fix?

Did exactly the same build - apart from the 2 Noctua case fans. You inspired me to choose the Define C case – an excellent choice. I kept the original case fans (Fractal Dynamic X2 GP-12). These are straightforward DC fans, the voltage is between 4 and 12 V. They now run on 6,6 V - you can set the fan voltage in the AMD BIOS. I can’t hear them from 1 meter away (but ok, I’m 53). Anyway, a very quiet PC. It was my first build, and a lot of fun to do it, and thanks to Youtube not very difficult to complete.
