More Than Building Computers

Posted July 23, 2014 by philip

Water project in Malawi

Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the daily tasks running this site and lose focus on the bigger picture. When I started PCPartPicker, I wanted it to be about more than just building computers, and to have an impact beyond myself, my family, and the visitors of the site. My desire was, and still is, to help people with fundamental needs that we often take for granted, such as access to clean water and sanitation.

Last week the first Charity:Water completion report arrived for a water project PCPartPicker sponsored in Malawi, Africa. Because of this project (the actual well is in the picture above), 373 people in the Chasembe community now have access to clean and safe drinking water. My heart is filled with joy hearing this news, and I wanted to share it with you because you're a part of it too.

As many of you know, PCPartPicker is supported through affiliate commissions from retailers we partner with. From the beginning we committed to donate part of our monthly earnings to charity. When you purchase components through retailer links on PCPartPicker, you're not only supporting this site - you're also supporting people like you see in the picture above. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being a part of this and helping us make this happen.

Water project in Malawi

The water project in Malawi is the first of many we have sponsored through Charity:Water. Above is a map showing the GPS coordinates of the well pictured (-13.27416667, 34.0163). As the completion reports arrive, we'll keep you updated. In the meantime, you have my deepest and sincerest thanks for supporting PCPartPicker and our vision. It would not be possible without you.

This is good. This makes me happy; not building PCs or anything else, but seeing people with plenty helping those in need. This is beautiful.

shavashav [2 Builds] 10 points 6 months ago

Couldn't see where to comment on this article so I'm just replying to your comment: This is awesome! So cool to see even the little guys reaching out and supporting social causes! Many bigger enterprises could learn a thing or two from you guys. Props +100

Hakumisoso [2 Builds] 7 points 6 months ago

There is a big box under the picture of africa where you put your comment.

Water is good.

NanoTechno 46 points 6 months ago

Faith restored in humanity !

Although I feel kinda bad for watercooling my PC recently...

immaman1992 [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

Lol. :P

fnapoli [1 Build] 42 points 6 months ago

I didn't realize PCPP was involved in this way! Makes me even happier to be involved in this community! Next stop: Well #2 !

philip [Staff,Submitter] [9 Builds] 23 points 6 months ago

I can't wait to get the next completion report! We have several more already funded, including two school projects in Ethiopia (water & sanitation) that I'm really excited about. If I remember correctly, usually there's about an 18-month lag between funding a project and completion (due to all the logistics and coordination along the way).

fnapoli [1 Build] 5 points 6 months ago

Oh, wow! I am going to read up on Charity Water...sounds like a great project! Thanks for sharing Philip! Keep up the great work!

philip [Staff,Submitter] [9 Builds] 10 points 6 months ago

They're a great charity - 100% of the donations go directly to fund water projects. They raise separately through private donors for their administrative costs. Here's some info about them on Charity Navigator.

zlogs [1 Build] -1 points 5 months ago

It's about time to update this Philip.

philip [Staff,Submitter] [9 Builds] 1 point 5 months ago

Excuse me?

zlogs [1 Build] -3 points 5 months ago

As in, it's about time to get something different on the front page. This is good and all, but it just gets old seeing the same content on the front page for month(s) at a time.

djdirka 0 points 5 months ago

is that because that isnt you on the front page ;)

zlogs [1 Build] -1 points 5 months ago

Absolutely not, I just believe with the revenue Philip is probably getting from vendors that are paying him to list parts.. He could afford to at least put new content on the front page every once in a while. If I did not like the work Philip and his staff member(s) were doing, I would not still be here. The new micro atx build he posted is fantastic and definitely is an eye catcher, but i'm sure me and other Pcpartpicker members wouldnt want to see it on the front page for months at a time.

djdirka 1 point 5 months ago

Oh I see. I am on mobile a lot so I don't see it that much

Davsmith4 4 points 6 months ago

Same! I never realized that this website was involved in things like this. It makes me happy to know they are. :)

sjs46 10 points 6 months ago

Well if it means I'm helping people... I'm buying a new graphics card tonight! awesome work with the charity!!

RobotBoy 9 points 6 months ago

My church raised 20,000 dollars exactly for charity water, its nice to know that I can help even more by building my own pc on pcpp.

blakceffect 8 points 6 months ago

God is awesome! Working in all the small ways. Very suprised!! BLESSED!!

I wish I would have known about PcPartPicker affiliate links, I would have clicked here before purchasing :(

NeonMane [1 Build] 3 points 6 months ago

Same here. :/

bahehs [1 Build] 2 points 6 months ago

where are they? there are no ads on this site, how is the admin making money?

mattk9609 [1 Build] 4 points 6 months ago

When you click on a link to a store on PcPartPicker (for a part or whatnot), PcPartPicker receives an affiliate bonus if you then purchase the product from that link....or so I assume.

Fresc 4 points 6 months ago

Well done. I do have a question. If this is a new pump why does it look so old and used? Salvaged parts?

philip [Staff,Submitter] [9 Builds] 5 points 6 months ago

I have another picture of the well that shows the plate on front in more detail - the pump itself was manufactured 9/2012 if that helps.

Fresc 3 points 6 months ago

Thanks for the reply and keep up the awesome work!

SuperBobKing 3 points 6 months ago

It looks like it is pretty new but just has dirt on it.

Itsuyame 4 points 6 months ago

now i can do 2 things i really love, help people that have an hard, unfair life AND buy PC components at the best possible offers :))

BlastXin 4 points 6 months ago

and building a PC is still cheaper than an OEM one! So you help the world better by buying PC parts through PCPP!

friedfacekkk [1 Build] 2 points 5 months ago

Alienware is pissed off right now.

sky23h [1 Build] 4 points 6 months ago

Very Awesome! Thank you for helping sponsor those less fortunate! I'm sure God loves to see all things, including PC Parts, being used as a tool to help people!

willkara 4 points 6 months ago

Holy crap guys (and gals)

This is awesome. I never would have though that this kind of good could be done through a site helping me to make computers.

I'm gonna be spreading this site even more now.

Songster [1 Build] 3 points 6 months ago

This is site is what gave me the confidence to build a pc in the first place. Good job on giving back:)

mcliman3 [2 Builds] 3 points 6 months ago

Just wanted to say guys that this is awesome. When I bought the parts for my computer off of this site I had no idea that some of my money was going towards this and it really makes me happy that all the people running this site are this caring. Thanks everyone, and now I will FOR SURE be buying all of my computer parts off of here!

Iron_Hero_ [1 Build] 3 points 6 months ago

philip i love what u have done here and also this website is AWESOME

Its Nice to know that there are still good people with good harts

keep it up and if there is any way that WE can help WE are here

ComputerBlooperNoob 3 points 6 months ago

There's this thing going around. Today I was just telling a kid not to waste water at a water fountain. Everyone wants to make the world a better place, not just for them, but everyone. Philip doesn't take donation money and keep it for himself. Instead, he goes out of his way to help people, all the way in Africa!

Three Ten thousand cheers for PCPartPicker!!!

redcayman 2 points 6 months ago

Thanks for helping those in need!

swhaley 2 points 6 months ago

I recently went to Africa to do work for a charity that a family friend has started over there doing this exact same thing. He has been able to put in over 1,200 wells in Ghana/Tanzania and honestly, this was the best experience of my life!

damric 2 points 6 months ago

Thanks, Phillip. Clean water is the most precious resource.

CheesyHotDogPuff 2 points 5 months ago

This make me proud to use Pcpartpicker.

Tzboy 2 points 5 months ago

Excellent cause! If everyone thought and acted this way, this world would be a much better and peaceful place.

You are so right about our busy lives, but you have made a real difference in real peoples lives...

A big kudos to you and your firm, I will Definitely be purchasing my hardware through your site from now on.

A quote comes to mind...

“A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.” - Forest E. Witcraft (American Scholar, Teacher and Scout Leader, 1894-1967)

Awesome to see this happen. Glad to be part of this great community and to see these incredible iniciatives!

Watchful 1 point 6 months ago

That is tremendous.

Eschaton [2 Builds] 1 point 6 months ago

Awesome job! I hope, in the true spirit of DIY, they got an included manual on how to build your own well for cheaper than the big box stores' well models :D

papaberr [2 Builds] 1 point 6 months ago

I had no idea about this project/charity. I will look to make purchases now through this site and will notify my friends that are beginning to build the own pcs. Thanks for the notice and keep up the good work!!!!

RisleySean [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

This is the second time i've seen a website pull this off, and amazingly BOTH were dedicated mostly to electronics and media! Facebook and the like might get big business deals, but only a few sites can say they are part of something bigger. I'm glad to see this happen, and hope for the best in this site's future efforts!

vortex25565 [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

wow nice!

Hakumisoso [2 Builds] 1 point 6 months ago

Did not know about this. Awesome.

tabascosauz [3 Builds] 1 point 6 months ago

Awesome work, Philip et al. It makes me happy that you guys at PCPartPicker are setting an example for the rest of the enthusiast community to follow. Truly there's more to PC enthusiasts than building computers.

Small-scale projects like this are a refreshing break from large-scale, publicized attempts at foreign aid. Good luck in your future endeavors.

zenthex 1 point 6 months ago

Makes me proud to be part of a community.

jay610 1 point 6 months ago

I use this site all the time and purchase through the links, but I registered just to acknowledge the importance of this milestone and to offer a hearty "well done" to Philip.

We in the developed world truly live charmed lives -- our problems are trivial relative to the challenges that people around the world must overcome every single day in order to survive. Thanks for making a few of those lives that bit better.

ShadowAngelzZ 1 point 6 months ago

philip, you sir are a caring man. God bless you.

JDKeyz [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

This is awesome and to add everyone's awareness I'd like to bring conflict minerals to the attention of anyone who loves technology as I do and help others understand a bit of what it takes to build the components we research regularly. http://www.enoughproject.org/conflict-minerals

chantymalo 1 point 6 months ago

Awesome work!

NZXTDood 1 point 6 months ago

Awesome work and the world's a better place for companies like PCpartpicker :)

swimmer1929 1 point 6 months ago

Who knew I could help people in Africa just by using PCPartPicker?! Awesome!

Questors 1 point 6 months ago

This is fantastic! I guess sometimes when we ask, "What can I do by myself?" It can as simple as this. It's such a shame the simple, easy and even obvious escape most of us so often. Congratulations and job well done!

RyneSmith [7 Builds] 1 point 6 months ago

Awesome PcPartPicker! I'm proud to say that, by buying some parts through the site, that I have contributed to that well!

I'm glad to be apart of this community!

Keep it up guys!

Daxtinator15 [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

This is amazing

gogo809 [2 Builds] 1 point 6 months ago

Wonderful Philip! You and your team have done a magnificent job with your original concept for the site. There have been so many features added, and your site makes it so much simpler to put together a parts list. In fact, it has certainly increased my understanding of components! For years to come, this will be the defacto computer building website, which will enable you to build many more well's and sanitation projects! Way to go team PCPP!

FieraTundra 1 point 6 months ago

This site is awesomeeeeeeee

smatdude13 [1 Build] 1 point 6 months ago

Wow..... I feel kinda bad because I just made my list here, but I didn't click the buy buttons on the list page, so it didn't link it to affliate page;( Is there anywhere I can donate?

manirelli [Staff] [2 Builds] 1 point 6 months ago

No worries! You can donate to them here http://www.charitywater.org/

DeLorean 1 point 6 months ago

I did a double-take when I saw this story, as I've been to Africa frequently with Young Life (specifically Liberia) and have friends in Malawi. Truly AWESOME what you're doing, and I finally registered to encourage you and everyone to continue to help others where we can, even if it's a little...it makes a difference! I'll be building a PC soon, and will do so through here of course :) Keep up the good work!

Thank you for helping sponsor those less fortunate and who are in need or clean water. There should be more business like yours who will help out others in need of things that most people take for granite. I hope you continue with this clean water project. Thank you again for giving to others and take care.

I got into sand filtration a couple of years ago... 5 gal buckets, pvc pipes, double stack. "Schmutzdeck" The biolayer that eats most of the bad guys. Charcoal for the metal stuff..Bleach what you drink. It's why they made beer, wine, & whiskey; no germs could live in it. No life without clean water.
