This was a PC I helped a friend pick out and build. He was set on buying an Alienware and I saved him lol. He basically wanted a gaming pc that will play at max graphics and will last awhile, without going overboard. I was lucky enough to be able to build my first 2 pcs in 2 months thanks to him =). Keep in mind this build was before Haswell and the 700 series release. Oh and as for the name, his nickname is switz and.... hes part german?... my explanation haha.
First off, I need to make a few points: -Yes, overkill on the RAM, I know. I had picked out a cheap 2x4 kit that happened to be 1866, but right when he purchased his family convinced him he needed 16gb. Wish we could have put that money inot the gpu but oh well it definitely won't hurt performance haha.
-I regret the motherboard choice... The board immediately felt cheap and flimsy the second I touched it, and we had trouble plugging in the 24-pin cable fully... that worried me. Also wanted to get him a board that would be good for overclocking (even though he doesn't want to) due to the K processor and cooler. I later found out this is a poor board for that.. Also turned out to be a narrow board compared to my gigabyte, that threw me off. (flex atx I think its called)
CPU: Best choice for only gaming (before haswell release)
Cooler: Enough for overclocking if he changes his mind and will keep it nice and cool otherwise
Mobo: Wanted a z77 for the unlocked cpu and he liked the color scheme.. regrets already listed...
RAM: He wanted blue RAM because looks are important to him, and last minute overkill
Hard drives: Good ssd for boot times, windows responsiveness, and a few games. Also a great hdd for the money and space.
video card: Originally had a 7970 ghz (before gtx700 series release) but once we added an ssd and he wanted to max his fans we decided this was best for his budget. Also came with free games.
Wireless adapter: Router is about 50ft from his room across the house.
Case: He picked it out because it looks epic and fit with his orange/blue theme. I agreed. Also has great cable management and a fan controller, although the fans are already super quiet.
LED fans: Great airflow and ended up looking really great!
PSU: Enough for his system and maybe some overclocking, while still saving a bit of money.
Optical drive: Windows came on a disc ;)
Keyboard: he really liked it although he regrets not getting a wireless KB for now because he is gaming with the pc next to a big ass tv haha.
Overall the build turned out well and I think I did pretty good on part choices for only knowing what a motherboard was for about 3 months haha. It runs anything he has thrown at it on absolute max. From Crysis 3 to borderlands 2, runs like butter on his 60hz 1080p tv. Also I must say, I am quite jealous, the color scheme ended up looking magnificent and is truly a sight in the dark, hard to choose between watching the game or the pc run haha.
As always comments are appreciated and any advice/criticism definitely helps! Im looking forward to more builds in the future and am already seriously considering overhauling my build now... Uh oh haha.
