Description

Inspired by Portal... Wheatley was MY test subject, as I put him through countless trials, on this, my first build. Six months of R&D, six days of part procurement, and six hours of building, brought this demon baby of a machine to life. WEI rates it a 7.7 since I opted to hold off on overclocking my CPU and Memory (after all, cant have Wheatley finding out he's perfect).

Decided to go with the GTX 660 Ti since it came with a free copy of Borderlands 2 steam code, pretty much giving me a $60 discount, since I was going to buy it anyway.

Next update will be to install a Ceton InfiniTV ($199 from Newegg) to add HD DVR capabilities for whole home streaming via WMC and Xbox Extenders.

The build could not have gone any smoother, not one hiccup. My only concern is that one day Wheatley becomes self aware and turns the tables on the whole Tester / Test Subject dynamic.... but what are the odds of that?

***UPDATE: for those asking about my desktops adaptive background. go here:

you are welcome.

AFV = Aperature's Funniest Villain

Smily 4 points 26 months ago

Hahaha, very good one

bobokiller 2 points 15 months ago

wow just wow

PacificNic 2 Builds 8 points 27 months ago

Where can you get those (I'm guessing they are) adaptive backgrounds? I love Portal and those look really nice... I want it.

th3m4dh4tt3r 1 Build 5 points 27 months ago

I think he is probably using rainmeter.

PacificNic 2 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

I really want that skin though.... So badly....

PacificNic 2 Builds 1 point 26 months ago

Thanks :)

RazzyFrazz 3 points 27 months ago

Very nice, well thought out build. RAM is lagging a bit behind for today's standards, but still good and viable.

Sidenote: Inside is too clean for that to be Wheatley.

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 4 points 27 months ago

thanks! sidenote noted. wont be clean for too long tho, he's got a bad habit of adopting dust bunnies... and those little punks poop EVERYWHERE!

missingcow 1 Build 3 points 26 months ago

This is so sweet. I love the case, it's very reminiscent of Portal. Awesome build!

I just hope it doesn't spring machine guns and start shooting at you while whispering sweet nothings about acquiring targets and wondering where you are.

Sal_L 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

Pretty nice overall. I would have pinched some pennies and dumped it into better graphics considering the processor you went with.

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

i was thinking of doubling up on a GTX 660Ti if i needed any more juice outta my GPU when prices deflate a little more. The most i put Wheatley through is a wee bit HEAVY gaming, and some photo editing.

Kevdo 3 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

When the 700 series comes out, I'm thinking the prices for the 600 series might go down a tiny bit, but Nvidia is stingy with their products so who knows.

Very nice build though, excellent case - I named mine FF7FF0, though I don't know if anyone will get why...

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

thanks!

also, FF7FF0. tellmetellmetellmetellmetellme.magenta?idontget.tellme

Kevdo 3 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

Haha. It's a secret!

No, actually it's the hex code for my favorite shade of orange. Which, I just realized I typo'd in the name of my build AND in the comment prior. I feel silly now.

The actual hex code is FF7F00. Whoops.

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

hahaha yes, i knew it was HEX. twas, magenta. you are welcome

slykrysis 3 Builds 2 points 27 months ago

Did you use the NZXT white extensions for the power supply? Thinking of getting some nice looking red ones for my HX750

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

yep. it was only a $35 hit for a $36 increase in aesthetic value!

slykrysis 3 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Can you link me the site where you got them?

tehfreeeman 2 points 26 months ago

I love Wheatley, even after he turns evil

Divdor 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

Everything looks good. Very nice cable work.

I would have went with a little faster RAM,but that is the only thing I see that stands out.

SeabassVar -6 points 27 months ago

the ram is going to slow it down rather upgrade to 1600 at least or 1866 is the best for that system

IamApropos 3 Builds 3 points 27 months ago

there would be nearly no noticeable performance difference between 1600 and 1866 especially on a ivy bridge build. That being said 1600Mhz would have been nearly the same price as what is on the list, usually cheaper.

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

thanks for the advice! i hadn't noticed any performance lag, but i think i will switch out for a 1600 and put my 1333 in my upcoming HTPC build.

Kevdo 3 Builds 3 points 27 months ago

Try overclocking your RAM. Might be you won't need to switch it out and you can save yourself the money.

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

thanks bud, just saved me a few shekels

flash93933 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

jakethemp 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Hydro 1 point 27 months ago

This thing is beautiful... Tell Wheatly I told him that

NUclearD3 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

Very nice build. And Portal 2 is one of the best games of the past few years.

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 5 points 27 months ago

really? but does the 7970 have soldering points in the shape of LIGHTNING BOLTS? because my 660Ti does, and that makes it go like twice as fast.. thats just science.

it was an easy call for me to buy an i7, especially when i only paid half the price for it. but yes, you're right, i would've gone i5-3570k otherwise.

none1980 4 points 27 months ago

I think he's just trying to be funny. Not everything has to be trolling. I laughed...

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

totally serious, facetiousness doesn't translate in text. i7 too pricey otherwise.

TestBuilds 2 points 27 months ago

Crysis 3 likes i7s though, so maybe it'll be worth it now.

[comment deleted]
TestBuilds 1 point 27 months ago

I've heard the same about the Visheras.

TestBuilds 1 point 27 months ago

That's a sexy build, although I say that about every build with a Phantom

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

hah, dunno about sexy, but geek chic for sure

JForce522 2 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

Where did you get that background/wallpaper? It looks AWESOME.

Ituckerz 1 point 27 months ago

Amazing build well done i only have one question where do you get the back ground is it on rainmeter? or a different program

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

indeed, rainmeter. skin made by an artist from deviantArt

Ituckerz 1 point 26 months ago

could you give me a link it would be much appreciated

th3m4dh4tt3r 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

Looks good, though put the PCIe Power cables through the cable mgmt opening closest to them, not through the one above them.

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 2 points 27 months ago

agreed. i just wanted to draw the eye away from the non white cables at the bottom.

th3m4dh4tt3r 1 Build 1 point 26 months ago

Ah, I see. Well it worked XD

Oliver 4 Builds 1 point 27 months ago

I think the 3570K, and the 670 would have been a better balance. Very nicely assembled, and good cable management!

Bartmanicus 1 Build -5 points 25 months ago

Depends what he planes to do =p,however the 660ti uses the same gk104 chip as the 670 and 680 so the performance difference is very small [the highest i have seen is about 7-10 fps]. The 3770k might be worth that 100$ in is budget it if he's doing any multi-threaded applications.

zyvox100 1 Build 1 point 27 months ago

Awesome cable management bro!

drouiine 1 point 26 months ago

I'm using the same case as you for my build and I'm wondering if getting an Asus GTX570 is a good idea. I've heard that because of its size it sags in the case. Also, would liquid cooling be a good idea or does a standard CPU cooler do the job? I'd like my machine to run quietly. My build is strictly for high end gaming. Thanks :)

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 1 point 26 months ago

I ended up buying a CM Hyper 212 EVO Sleeve Bearing. its rate at 9 - 36 dBa but i cant hear it run. Even while i am gaming i can barely hear my 4 fans going. I dont know too much about the GTX570 but go here: http://pcpartpicker.com/builds/#g=7

this is all of the PCpartpicker users build with the GTX570. .you should be able to see how their GPU's sit on their motherboards.

hope this helps

drouiine 1 point 26 months ago

Which fans do you use?

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 1 point 26 months ago

stock nzxt case fans, and NZXT Air Flow Series 83.6 CFM 140mm

GoldenScythe 1 point 26 months ago

I feel like an idiot but, i've never done this before. i saw that this didnt have a wireless network connector. do you need one of those to connect to wifi? and if you do, I'm getting google fiber soon so I'd like to have one that supports at least 800 mbps. Thanks to anyone who is willing to help.

rjc34 1 point 26 months ago

Yes, you'd need to add either a USB or PCIe wifi adapter, unless you specifically buy one of the few motherboards with it built in.

To handle that kind of speed though, your ideal option would be gigabit ethernet, as that will deliver ideal speeds at a reasonable price.

If you must go wireless, the fastest solution is going to be 802.11ac wireless, but the cost of a wireless router supporting it, and a proper PCIe card capable of delivering that speed is going to be ~$250.

Jpug22932 1 point 26 months ago

I'm thinking of getting the same mobo.... Your thoughts on it?

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 1 point 26 months ago

its an amazing board. i especially like that it is WiFi ready and has a really sleek bios. haven't overclocked yet, but this board is supposed make it a pretty easy process. just a really well rounded mobo

OutspaceLeo 1 point 24 months ago

Amazing! Love the Portal references.

Mattyice47 1 Build 1 point 24 months ago

Was the CPU Cooler hard to install?

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 2 points 24 months ago

it was cake

FireflyNerd 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

THE CAKE IS A...

Come on, I'm amazed nobody said this in five months.

12allanon1 1 point 18 months ago

good catch ;)

mickeyoneball 1 point 23 months ago

Hi, Great looking build!! im attempting my first and am choosing your optical drive, how do you find it? some problems on some forums about reading & burning blu-rays??

DeusAres 1 point 23 months ago

Should have went with this power supply to help match the color scheme...

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/pc-power--cooling-power-supply-ppcmk3s750

Beautiful build though. Portal 2 was awesome.

PacificNic 2 Builds 1 point 23 months ago

What front intake fan did you end up using?

coolman 1 point 23 months ago

Wheatly is running on Windows 7 Home Premium? mind blown

theSovietWombat 1 point 22 months ago

Do those blue lights around the buttons and in the fan areas come with the case?

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 1 point 22 months ago

yes. yes they do.

DanJZ0404 1 point 22 months ago

I love this build. I actually have the same exact RAM in my current rig. Which sucks, compared to this. I would have probably opted for 1600 or 1866 RAM, but as Kevdo said, you could simply overclock it. I would have gone for a CPU a little bit cheaper, maybe an i5 or something. You can't beat the prices for that hard drive, although there is a Seagate Barracuda for around $70. That SSD was a nice choice although it seems to me OCZ SSDs cost a lot more than others. 3TB of storage can't be beat for gaming. I would have gone for probably a 670 or a 680. Maybe even a 690. Great choice of your case, although I always love the Corsair Obsidian Series 800D. Although an 800D would be overkill for this build. For a PSU I would have gone for a SeaSonic, but a Corsair is great anyway. I don't know what you are using that rig for, so I can't say anything about your DVD drive. I would have gone for a BenQ XL2420T. It's 120Hz and costs $30 more. Your keyboard and mouse choices are great, and I don't know much about tuners, so I can't judge you on that one.

7em 1 point 22 months ago

Nice pics

Arrowdodger 1 point 22 months ago

First, Wheatley would be awe inspired by how you made him. Second, your case, video card, memory and SSD. How do you like the case? Is it quite enough space for it's purpose? Why did you pick the 660 Ti, as in how is it doing for you? (because I was making one with a 660 2GB and was wondering how you chose between the 2). How is the crucial ballistex working for you compared to, lets say, a corsair brand memory? Compared to Samsung how much would you say your OCZ SSD is for performance? Great build for just over 2K

bradfuller99 1 point 21 months ago

TL;DR: Wheatley is a bad-*** gaming rig.

Cube_of_Rubik 1 point 20 months ago

I have a noob question. You might say I should've researched on it, but I'm just too lazy. How does the blue lighting on the top work? Is it part of the case or did you buy external hardware? Thanks.

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

the lights are included in the NZXT case

DerpRNBWDash 1 point 20 months ago

Hey I know its a little late but what is the height demension on this sexy beast of a case?

iceman343447 1 point 20 months ago

While I realize this is an old post, how many fans can fit in this case? In your pictures I only see one. Thanks in advance!

StUfAnDsTuFs 1 point 19 months ago

Im getting this same case. hope its a good one

DrunkenAlchemist 1 point 17 months ago

This is a pretty sexy build.

rcarroll98 1 point 15 months ago

Thanks for ruining Portal 2 for me with the description :'(

morgueman 1 point 14 months ago

does outlet pc ship? like if your getting the windows from them?

Robyra 1 point 14 months ago

It's very pretty and fast but there are cheaper solutions for RAM and other specs.

Zvonfeng 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

Hey, I heard NZXT Phantom (White) ATX Full Tower has fan control problem. Does it happen on u yet?

linuxfanatic 1 point 12 months ago

Whats a wheatly?

DonutDefector 1 Build 1 point 12 months ago

NICE! +1

minimon2000 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

this was a triumph...

ghostroaster5 1 point 10 months ago

Where did you get the wallpaper? Not the rainmeter skin, the wallpaper?

zcp17 1 point 10 months ago

How did you not buy NZXT's Aperture M for this build!? It would have been perfect!

you741 1 point 8 months ago

Does the CPU cooler come with thermal paste? And do you find that it keeps it cool after a long time of heavy gaming?

apresser 1 point 8 months ago

Out of all the things that you could cut money off of you chose the ram. Why DDR 1333?! Build looks good though.

Darin2000 1 point 8 months ago

Does the CPU get over 60C?

Variable.variables 1 point 7 months ago

How does this run Portal 2... Why did you buy 1TB of 7200RPM storage for over 255 dollars? When I build my computer, should I call it GLADOS?

RacerD123 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

question: Why do you have 3 storage devices but only 8 GB of RAM?

RBambrook 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Very good looking build! Lots of care and attention to detail has gone into the planning and execution.

TrueSenpai 1 point 2 days ago

With this build can I play games at 1080p and 60fps along with streaming and editing videos ?

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 1 point 2 days ago

indeed. lots of destiny gameplay video editing have been done with this build.

DonutDefector 1 Build 0 points 12 months ago

BUT YOU CAN GET A AMD FOR LESS BUT SLIGTLY WOURCE BUT +1

DonutDefector 1 Build 0 points 12 months ago

I HAVE A Seagate Barracuda 1tb FOR ONE

on_droid 1 Build -1 points 27 months ago

One suggestion would be to move the 8 cpu cable. There is a cutout right above it so that you can route the cable behind the motherboard. You should never have to route a cable across the motherboard, especially with this case.

kelsyntsubaki submitter 1 Build 3 points 27 months ago

agreed. i just wanted to draw the eye away from the unsightly non white cables at the bottom. just my attempt at jedi-ing your brain away from the inconsistencies. "these arent the cables your looking for!"

conorst -6 points 15 months ago

that is such a cool computer but I think you could use more processing speed like an AMD

12345678 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

tell me exactly which amd processor is faster than a i7? They are some of the most powerful processors on the market.
